Thanks for the explanations. Great point on new Friday rule and its effect on certain players.

shawn

how confident are you with Chipper, Glaus, Ortiz, Milledge in rds 11-14? and then dYoung in 16?

for a variety of reasons, these picks seem to have issues over a season. whether it's injury or attitude.

shawn - thanks for sharing. i like the first three picks, then i think the wheels came off a bit. of course i haven't seen the draft board, so i don't know for sure who was there when you picked but i looked like you made some major jumps in your picks. better be right

good luck this year

Just wondering with all that money on the line if it bothers you when another owner goes for all the RP strategy?

He took some risk - Reyes and Soriano. I looked at his team in round 15 when Danks fell to him. I thought the draft was braking right for him. Two years ago he owned Santana and I thought he would take him if he fell to him.

In live events it easier to follow other teams.

[/QUOTE]I was the other idiot that punted that punted wins and K's, it had nothing to do with 4th place money. I felt I was at a disadvantage of going 26 weeks against some of the top owners in the nation if I played it straight up. I didn't really feel my strenghth was doing the free agents every sunday against these owners. I live in the west coast my sundays are busy. I try to play to my strenghts and hide my weaknesses. With 2 owners punting K's and wins, there is a possible 49 points in pitching. I think I drafted a team that can give me 65-70 points in offense, I'm playing to win not to come in the money.

I also played the ULIT Auction right after the diamond, I knew 2 possible owners were going to punt K's and wins and they did. I drafted a team that I thought could win. My pitching staff in the auction:

Beckett, Jimenez, A.J. Burnett, Latos, Marcum, Cahill, Saunders,Zito, Richard, Garland, Tillman, and Cook.

Closers:

Papelbon and Marmol.

I did punt speed I thought that gave me the best chance to win.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my different strategies.

I'm assuming these are your 2 main event teams...

Now that the main is over, I wanted to get your take on a couple players we both drafted (I drafted 3/27 and posted the team on page 2 of the "official here's my main event team" thread).

Alexei - My only fear is that he hits 8th or 9th in the lineup. I think he's flown under the radar with a quiet spring this year and actually still has nice upside.

BJ Upton- Nice spring and another year removed from shoulder surgery.

Slowey- Possibly this year's '09 Wainwright. His k rate has steadily improved.

Buchholz- I like him as a #5 although really wish my team had one extra ace and didn't rely so much on the upside of so many young pitchers like Buchholz.

also, what rd did you get these players? just curious as I feel we reached for Upton at 3.12 and Slowey in the 10th.

good luck to you this year (as if you need it).

After the first three shortstops came off the board, next player I was interested in at SS was Alexei. By drafting Tulo, I avoided thinking about Reyes. I owned Jeter last year, but I liked him better in the 6th round.

When I looked at the teams in January, I thought Ramirez had a chance to bat leadoff. Even though he regressed in many fantasy players minds. I thought his plate discipline improvement was a step in the right direction. If he hits, he will bat in a more favorable part of the batting order. I had Beckham hitting second. If Pierre hold the lead off job, Ramirez could move up to second. In the end, he is SS that could hit 20+ homers with double digit speed with upside. I didn't have to own him, but he is where I was looking to go if I didn't draft a SS early. If he was on the board too long, I was willing to take him as an edge at MI position. If my speed was in good shape early, I probably looked at another position.

I know many players talked about the 75/75 goal on the boards this year. Many thought it was difficult to hit those numbers after the first three rounds with certain player combinations. BJ Upton was the moveable piece in the third round. He has risk, but he has a lot of talent. I was looking for him in most drafts in the third. He put my target numbers in line.

In the first main event, I paired Rollins at SS with Tulo. By doing this, I didn't need a player like BJ as much. When Greinke presented himself in the 3rd, I knew I need power. BJ went before my pick.

With the pitching moved up the couple weeks before the draft, I thought I would take two starters on the 5/6 turn. I pasted on power (most likely 1B) and took Greinke. I thought there was a chance that I could get Butler in the 5th.

When I took Zobrist in the 4th, I thought I was close to my hitting numbers with my first three picks.

Upton has plus speed with solid power. When the season is over, he might be a player some people wished they invested in.

I don't think Slowey has Wainwright K's potential. He should have a solid whip and maybe 150 K's.

For me, it came down to Price or Buchholz many times. I wish I moved up Hughes in this category because he might be further along in his development.

I drafted Buckholz enough. He should improve, but he might still have some growing pains.

I took BJ Upton at 3.10 and Slowey in the 11th.
