Free Agent Super Sleeper!

As people realize it’s late, fantasy operators, otherwise lax, must yearn for rich, insightful expertise, not data surplus. I know that is hard to hear from one of the passionate number crunchers out there, but there is more to fantasy baseball that dry data and stats. With that in mind, I would like to share a name that will become all important as the fantasy season matures. If you want a true sleeper, I have one for you.

I work for a multi-national corporation. Recently, a co-worker on assignment over-seas heard about a special player who is quickly becoming the talk of baseball in Europe. Knowing my interest in baseball, this person passed his name on to me. And the scouting population in the US is beginning to have real interest in this player who could help pitching starved teams THIS YEAR.

It took me a great while, even with the power of the internet, but I finally came across information on this player playing independent ball in Italy. How under the radar is this guy? He grew up in Bodoni on Lower Caisse, a part of the small Indian Ocean island chain of San Seriffe. His mother emigrated there from the Balkans seeking religious and social freedoms. Despite the lack of decent baseball facilities, he supposedly got his interest in baseball and taught himself how to throw by watching and mimicking Atlanta Braves greats such as Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine via satellite TV.

After spending two years in the US pitching for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Georgia, (he had a cousin on the faculty staff there), he was signed to play ball overseas to be near his mother, Yente, who had relocated there. Now, after two years of semi-pro ball, he is credited with having four major league ready pitches, including a plus fastball, a change-up, slider, and fork ball. He will be 23 this August 6th, stands 6’2” and weighs 195 lbs. And guess what, he is a lefty. His name is Maven Gornisht.

Keep your eye out for him. He is supposedly in negotiations with several major league teams to join their minor league organizations. He could be a keeper.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
