Guest Speakers Set for Welcome Receptions

We are happy to report that we will have special guest speakers for each Welcome Reception in New York, Las Vegas and Chicago. Thanks to help from the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, Bill Campbell will be our guest speaker in Chicago and Marty Barrett will be our guest speaker in Las Vegas. We are still finalizing plans for our New York guest speaker.

Campbell played 15 years in the major leagues, including two with the Chicago Cubs (1982-83). He finished his career with an 83-68 record and 126 saves, including an AL-high 31 in 1977. His career ERA was 3.54. Bill lives in the Chicago area and will talk about the game today and take questions from the crowd in a light-hearted, fun atmosphere.

Barrett played 10 years in the majors, including the first nine in Boston. He finished with a .278 average, 18 HRs and 314 RBIs. Barrett now lives in Las Vegas and is excited about talking baseball with our group of dedicated baseball fans.

The players will be on hand for the Welcome Receptions starting at 5 p.m. and will speak to the audiences at 6 p.m. Industry experts will follow their discussions and take Q&A from the audience as people get last minute updates before Draft Day. It's just another way that we are making the NFBC more than just a draft.

Interested to hear what Marty has to say about being a the 2B of the 86 Red Sox. Does he believe in the curse?

He can also tell us about all the intangibles a career average .278-2-31-6 guy can bring to your fantasy team.

Although in fairness I must acknowledge that in 1987 and 1988 Bill James rated him in the top 4 second basemen in the AL, and I recall having him on my team at least one of those years. Back then middle infielders weren't expected to be offensive machines.

Leaderboard...Everything in Baseball isn't Fantasy or win shares (well maybe in your world it is)..but some of us think and follow baseball above and beyond the Fantasy level...I think you can call us REAL fans.) Nice to get the insiders view of someone who was there and expierenced the World Series, hear what they have to say...rather then just "fantasize" about it. Thanks and Kudos to Greg for bringing more to the NFBC then just Fantasy.

I will only add that I was an ardent (but apparently not REAL) fan for 25 years before fantasy sports ever came along. I'm glad to report that Kevin Goldstein, general manager of BaseballAmerica.com, has agreed to join our panel of speakers at the Chicago NFBC Welcome Reception, Friday, March 19. Kevin and Fantasy Sports Magazine Managing Editor Tom Kessenich will handle the Q&A in Chicago and we are still trying to get at least one more industry person. We also are still working on the special guest speaker for New York and hope to announce that soon. Enjoy everyone and best of luck in your drafts.

Greg, any chance at Pete Rose? Maybe he can sign some books and take a few snapshots. I think Vegas would be a good spot, don't you?

Pete is actually a spokesman for Krause's in our sports collectibles field, but we can't afford to bring him to Vegas!!! Actually, I know that he is signing that Saturday in Chicago at the Sun-Times show at the same facility as our NFBC draft. Two guys who called yesterday to inquire about the NFBC told me he was part of that weekend's autograph lineup.

I didn't want to make a special post for this, but I did want to let everyone know that we will be having Harmon Killebrew and Amos Otis speak on Wednesday night, March 17th at our Fantasy Sports Trade Conference at the Rio. If anyone is in town early and at the Rio, let me know and I'll try to introduce you to Harmon and Amos. We have a cocktail party from 6 to 7 before our actual banquet and you could stop down for a drink with us during that time. If you're in town early, let me know.

I think Rick Cerone will be the featured guest speaker in New York. We are finalizing that as we speak, but he should have some interesting info on the Yankees and good stories from the past. I'll let you know when we finalize that.
