Why the need to speak Medical speak?

Post by sportsbettingman » Mon Apr 12, 2010 6:35 am

I'd assume there are less than one half of one percent of fantasy baseball players out there who are doctors. That leaves 99.5% of the core of fantasy baseball players NOT doctors.

Why then do the reporters feel the need to use "contusion" rather than the layman's term of "bruised?"

Are they trying to impress or teach everyone a bit of medical terminology?

Are they trying to make the players seem tougher for all those fantasy players who think a contusion is something more serious than a bruise?

I just don't get it. Call it like it is, and stop trying to force medical terminology into your reporting of minor issues.

Contusion = bruise.

Abrasion = scratch.

Concussion = knocked the f-out! :D

Definition of Contusion:

Contusion: Another name for a bruise. What is a bruise ? A bruise, or contusion, is caused when blood vessels are damaged or broken as the result of a blow to the skin (be it bumping against something or hitting yourself with a hammer). The raised area of a bump or bruise results from blood leaking from these injured blood vessels into the tissues as well as from the body's response to the injury. A purplish, flat bruise that occurs when blood leaks out into the top layers of skin is referred to as an ecchymosis.

...and another thing for all these *ussy players with an achy back or the like who need to sit out a couple days to feel all better...

"Chipper Jones hurt his back while testing his strained right oblique."

Well, I know Fudd's response :D but, seriously, how do you hurt one part of your body while testing another part? Chipper has gone beyond brittle. He's fossilized. Or Chipperized.

That's almost one sixth of participants.
