Greg,
Will you please take a look at it and at least consider temporarily removing him from the pool. I can understand why a team may throw a closer back at this point. I do think you should at least consider pulling him though.
Thanks for taking this under consideration.

Greg is out of the office until the end of the week but I have emailed him about this and we'll talk about it further. I'll provide an update when we reach a decision.

I hate that someone in a league other than mine dropped Dotel, but unless there's reason to think that this was some type of collusion, I don't see how they can remove him from the pool without really violating the rules that everyone signed up to play under. This is just an extreme example of how much success in NFBC sometimes depends on the luck of the draw.

I agree with waiverwire. The Dotel drop happened in my league by the way. The owner seems to be going with an all-SP strategy as he dropped Frank Fransciso as well and has no other RPs in his roster.
I also saw someone drop Grady Sizemore in another league. I don't think Grady should be removed from the pool either.

Dont think we need to remove every shaky closer, soon to be traded to probably a setup job, from the faab pool.

I talked to Greg and the owner who dropped Dotel and we're leaving him in the free agent pool. The owner who dropped him has struggled in the saves category this season and is attempting to go with starters instead. That is a reasonable strategy in my opinion. Furthermore, Dotel is not an established closer with a history of proven success.
So at this time we see no reason to remove Dotel from the free-agent pool in that league.

Thank you Tom and Greg for making the decision you guys did. If someone can't drop a sh*ta$$ closer with a 6 era and 1.5 whip who never had any sustained history of success at closer, then every week we'd have issues with drops!!!

Dotel stinks and will be traded away sooner rather than later to a situation where he isnt even a closer. so what are we really talking about 5-7 saves max until this happens. I thought only good players were removed from free agent pools. Dotel hardly qualifies and I'm an owner of Dotel in a auction league.

Many owners would give their left nut for Dotel. For example Quahog's top ten team overall with everything covered but saves. Just saying.

Your honor I would like to call Kenny Rogers being removed from the pool to the stand and let my buddy Chico question him for a minute.
I asked for it to be reviewed some agreed some did not. Decision made and I can certainly see the logic in it move on.

Waiverwire is a newbie who doesn't even realize the spirit of the rule. Just making sure posts like his aren't swaying the decision. I'm not in the league and haven't looked at the league, it's all general principal that I'm protecting. When it happens next time in a league that matters, the precedent will already have been set.

Craig, as you know we evaluate every move that comes up for discussion on a case-by-case basis. As I explained, the owner who dropped Dotel did so because he believed he had no chance to gain meaningful ground in the Saves category so he elected to go with all starters instead. We cannot force him to keep a player he does not want when he is making a strategic decision to try and improve his team. And again, Dotel is hardly a proven closer with a history of success. His nearly 6 ERA this season is proof of that. If this were an elite closer it could lead us to view the move differently. But this a pitcher who has never proven he can consistently close at a high level being dropped by an owner who is doing so for strategic reasons, not to try and help anyone else in his league.
Personally, I don't have any problems with what the owner has done here and I might consider the same course of action if I was in his shoes. He's making a strategic decision that all owners make during the season. This is part of what makes the game fun and we do not want to issue a mandate on what strategies NFBC owners can or cannot employ during the season.

No problem Tom, I wasn't questioning the owners decision at all. It was sound. I was only speaking of the rule of removing a player from the free agent pool who could effect the overall if picked up by a team competing for the overall.

That's definitely taken into consideration. In this instance, we're looking at the player's history and Dotel is anything but a proven closer. It's possible he could deliver for any owner who has him but there's also risk involved. He's not a slam dunk by any means and that's when it becomes a strategic decision. Those are the moves that we will allow to be played out.

Closers are such a pain in the ass.
They're a lot like kickers in football. We need them at the most crucial point of the game and most times leading up to that point, they have made little or no contribution at all.
Tommy John surgery has knocked out Joe Nathan this year. There is not a cintilla of a chance that he gets a save this year.
Yet, Nathan is still owned in 14% of leagues.

Craig is right about my newbie status. My argument was actually made without realizing that there is a rule in place to remove impact players from the free agent pool. Knowing that, I'm not so sure what the right course of action is here. I'd give my left nut for Dotel in one league, if I didn't already have him on my team. It seems like a less subjective rule would work better.

For the most part, the dropped player is what is taken most into consideration. Not the owner who decides to waive him because he is trying to go without saves, in this case. Tom stated that if it were Mariano who was cut, the move would probably be reversed. Although it is taken into consideration, the owner does not need a valid reason to drop any player.
