I have already tried to analyze what i did wrong this year, which was a lot(see last post). BUt I decided to take a look at what separates a winner. Quahogs beat me last year in a Slow draft and ran away with the league. After the fact, his profile shows that he is a consistent winner over the years and his Main draw teams are 2 and 29 right now. Idedcided to take a look and see what he did right.
His draft looked like this
1 Howard(perhaps why he has fallen to #2 this week?)
2 Holliday
3. Jeter
4 Cruz
5, Ubaldo
Through first 5, his strategy seems to be to get sure fire power, abate the potential of avg drain from Cruz and Howard with Jeter and Holliday and land a stud pitcher. Turns out Cruz and Howard have added avg as a bonus and Ubaldo, istead of being just a stud, is perhaps THE stud.
6 Butler
7 Cain
8 Rios
9 Asdrubal
10 KRod
He liked Butler Rios and got them in both of his Main drafts, but neither ahead of their targetted slots...so perhaps, he just liked their values this year. Rios has turned into a boon, while Butler is probably not giving 6th round numbers.
Cain was a hit and Asdrubal was dropped after he was injured early on. KRod has been 10th round material until he made the mug shot list.
It looks to me like he was going for a reliever, a second starter, a first baseman and then a runs/avg/sb infielder to pair with his power. My guess is that he just liked Rios this year.
10-15, he hit hard and often.
10 DLR was injured and has not contributed much, but is healthy now
11 Lidge has been ok as #2 closer
12 Prado was awesome until last week
13 Rasmus-great numbers from this slot and a 4TH OF!
15 Price perhaps the pick of his draft and this might have been a bit lucky since I think he was generally going earlier...so he might have just fallen
16-20 also yielded nice results
16 Glaus had awesome run for about 6 weeks
17 Milledge was dropped by Q but is not a terrible 5th OF
18Happ injured
19 Francouer-dropped in 1st week. He missed out on about 3 weeks of good production
20Posednik- seems like he is a common denominator in success. A guy who put up nice numbers across the brd in late rd
21-30 produced theses guys that he still has:
Colby Lewis
Padilla (whom he dropped and then picked up again)
Olivo
Pick Ups-Drops
Q mostly makes mid to low level bids. He made numerous adds of guys who are obscure, and possibly gets a bit antsy at times.
His great pick ups were Angel Pagan in week 3 for 13
Jason Vargas in Week 4
Cahill in week 6
Padilla in week 10
F Lopez week 7
Pick ups whom he dropped too quickly:
Keppinger week 4
D Murphy week 5
Mad Bum Week 8 dropped week9
Burrell
Chris Johnson
In retrospect, the draft looks fairly solid, with breakout type years from Rios, Price, Rasmus, Prado, Ubaldo. Not a ton of injury. Not a ton of production after Round 16.
Pagan was a great pick up who gives 5 categories. Vargas has been mostly solid, if unspectacular. Cahill has been a great find. So 3 truly great pick ups and a handful of contributors.
So what is it that makes Quahogs so good, that he CONSISTENTLY wins wherever he pplays?
does this look much different then your team:
C Olivo, Ianetta
1bOverbay(Howard)
2b F Lopez
3b Glaus
ss Jeter
MI Kennedy
CI Butler
OF: Cruz, Holliday, Pagan, Rasmus, Rios, Pods
SP Cahill, Cain, Ubaldo, DLR, Colby Lewis, Price, Niese, KROD and Lidge?
Probably not. So what makes the difference? Perhaps others can weigh in. Is it solidifying an OF with 5-6 studs? Picking up a couple of pitching studs late (LEwis, Price, Cahill)?

Nice assessment Doug. It does seem the results out strip the sum of its parts though right? I think I've squeezed as much out of this team as I possibly can. Now I have to start dealing with some erosion. Great. Oct 3rd never looked so sweet

Quahogs-Cold Hard Look Part 2
This post was meant in total respect....a search for what sets Q apart. Q youve got Prado and Howard coming back real quick which should inject some life almost immediately.
