MLB Contract League

Post by KJ Duke » Wed Dec 15, 2010 10:34 am

For those not familiar, the MLBC (major lge baseball contract) League was a standard 15-team draft league hosted by the NFBC, using most NFBC rules ... with a twist.

The entry fee varied by team, with each team owner paying $10 in entry per $million for the sum of their player's real contracts.

The payout also had a unique feature with part of the prize money going to the owner who performed best on a formula of roto points relative to team salary. So you could draft like a small market team and be a longer-shot to win it all, but with a better shot at top Mgr and with less upfront money involved; or draft like the Yankees and be the odds-on favorite with a stacked team, but at the expense of a Yankee budget.

I'll need to talk to Greg to see if he's open to running this again, if he agrees I'll put it together for this season. The main reason I didn't run it last year was the time it took gathering salaries, but I can download those quickly now.

One change will be making this a 30-round draft with FAAB rather than the original DC format.

It will be a slow draft beginning sometime in January. In 2008, the average team cost was just over $1000. Highest was $1800+, lowest was $200+.

Will this be the only league, or will you be doing the MLBC-5 again also?

For those interested in the proposed league structure, please visit the league blog I've set up.

MLBC League

I also have a preliminary list of salaries listed there alphabetically. Unlisted players are at the league minimum $400,000, or $4 for league purposes. For players not currently under contract in 2011, their 2010 salary is in effect. This list will be updated as players sign new contracts up until a freeze date prior to the draft.

What happens with current FA?

Ex: Beltre is at $10. If he signs with a team at 10mil a year does his salary go up to $100 or does it stay at $10.

Do you have a projected date and will this be a slow draft? Thanks

Sorry, just saw the post above. So any players not signed by draft time will keep their 2010 salaries?

Thanks

Thanks Beltre should be listed at $90 from last season, not $10. The salary list needs to be scrubbed as the $10 ($1 mill) is what he will be paid this season in deferred money from his prior contract.

Using Beltre as an example, his $90 salary from last season would apply if he doesn't sign a new deal prior to the draft.

Will be a slow draft. Draft date TBD, but a start somewhere between the mid and end of January is likely.

Great concept. The more I think about it, the more interested I get. A ton of strategy.

Just curious, why the switch from DC to FAAB?

Well, I was planning to limit my FAAB leagues this year so I could concentrate most of my focus on a few of the big ones, but this looks like it could end up being a big one....and a lot of fun.

I'm in.

KJ,

Would love to do this, but slow draft format extremely hard for me due to work constraints / life issues.

Any chance of a normal draft version of this?

if not, count me in and I will figure this out
