Prepping for this draft has really opened my eyes to the ridiculous salaries some of these players are making. I don't have a problem with what they're making, that's the way it works. More power to them if the owners want to pay the big bucks to them. The contract length for some of these players is what skews it to make it look so bad. The studs with the high salaries deserve what they can get. They're the players filling the seats in the stadiums. It's the players with little value to their respective MLB team and us fantasy players that raise the ole eyebrows.

Here's just a few that stand out to me.

in millions

chris snyder 6.3

todd helton 10.6

chipper jones 14.0

carlos guillen 13.0

rafael furcal 13.0

vernon wells 26.6

manny ramirez 20.0

and the pitchers are even worse, just to name a couple

jeremy bonderman 12.5

mark buehrle 14.0

barry zito 18.5

scott kazmir 12.0

joe blanton 10.5

johan santana 22.5

aj burnett 16.5

Burnett and Zito were perfectly healthy and didn't even pitch in postseason last year.

how about 5.5 million for joaquin benoit

I know these guys had their day and most probably deserved what they got, but "WOW"

How about the leprechaun on Kyle Farnsworth shoulder?

Farnsworth, a right handed reliever, has given up an earned run for every two innings pitched during his career. Eight years of his career, he has had an ERA north of 4.00

Most right handed relievers with these stats would already be drummed out of the majors. Not Farnsworth, he just signed for over three million dollars with the usually frugal Rays.

I don't know who is agent is, but he should be commended. His agent has signed contracts totaling 35 million dollars for Farnsworth over his career.

A case where the agent outperformed the player.

Funny you mention Farnsworth, Dough. Every and I mean EVERY time I hear his name, the vision of him tackling, picking up, and/or throwing poor-ole Paul Wilson to the ground a few years ago comes to me. Wilson didn't know what he was getting into that day when he decided to charge the mound.

Kinda like Robin V. and Nolan. Robin still has a knot on top of his head where Mr. Ryan was wearing it out that day. That was sooooooo funny.

I was watching that game, Farnsworth just manhandled him.

Farnsworth, from what I've read, is chiseled, and not someone to mess with. It's best to stand 60 feet away to hit him.

And with the first pick in the 2011 MLBC Draft, Cobb (Joe Anthony) selects ....

Farnsworth brings two skills that are rare and marketable: (1) he's tall, and (2) he throws wicked fastballs right down the middle....hmmm, maybe that down-the-middle part explains the ERA history.

Watching a few long balls Farnsworth gave up when he was with the Cubs I couldn't help but think of some of the one-liners from Major League and Bull Durham.

Doughboys is correct, Kyle's agent should go to the Hall of Fame for getting him those contracts. Of course, in the great history of bad contracts, I expect that his are far from the worst.

Kevin Brown comes to mind, as does Julio Lugo who I think made $9 million last season for not playing. That's profit, baby!

That's tough. Way to parlay one decent season in Texas into a monster contract on the west coast.

A-Rod's extension could end up tops on the list; who knows what the Yankees will be getting for $30 million a year by the end.

Helton's extension seems pretty ludicrous.

I'd mention Jason Kendall and Dayton Moore, but somewhere west of the Rockies a blood curdling scream would cause a series of avalanches... :D

dayton brought in kendal for his "gameness" ( not a word) and that elusive ability to handle a staff. if jason gets that group of starters to have a collective era under 4 they should pay him about 50 milion. posey was supposed to have been too young and inexperienced to handle a staff. he seemed to do ok. my theory? when you have 4 stud pitchers the catcher doesn't matter that much.

i'm fairly unsure how everyone is going to approach this thing, but hopefully with seasoned MLBC vets GlennX, RT, KJ, and Shawn/Nelson picking in front of me in the first round, I'm sure there will be nobody remaining at 11 that I'm looking at. If there's still a few of my original picks available, then I'm REALLY looking at this the wrong way...
