Yankees trade Joba to the Phillies for Blanton?

[/QUOTE]Well, I am not suggesting it may happen. Just taking a couple of the more active topics on the board from the past and having some fun is all.

But you know what they say about having to explain jokes - that means they aren't funny.

Todd I like it...Why is this a crazy idea?

The Phillies need to shave cash off their payroll after the Cliff Lee signing and have a very expensive Blanton as their #5 Starter to flip.

Joba is just 25 years old, has 3 years of team control left at what will be a very good price and has the following line so far in his young career.

353.1 IP, 362 k's, 18 W's, 4 S's, 3.772 ERA and 1.3594 Whip.

If I were the Phillies, I would take this gamble in a second and trust that Halladay, Lee, Oswald, and Hamels can show him a thing or two on the mound every 5th day. Also, with him being the #5 in Philly, they can rest him any time they want to watch his innings until he is fully stretched out a gain. Don't worry, DOC and LEE will eat those innings up in a heartbeat!

Joe Blanton is a decent pitcher, but he is no ace and if you look at his numbers, its pretty clear Joba could EASILY match them.

The Phillies already have the headcase closer Lidge, they don't want another wild-card in Joba. No chance in hell.

Didn't mean for this to be "real", but what the hey...

Sure, the Phillies would do it in a New York second.

But why would the Yankees do it?

They can usually find a Blanton-type on a team that REALLY needs to lose payroll and it won't cost them anything close to Joba.

They are better off signing Millwood or Bush and perhaps Duchscherer then dealing Joba for an impact pitcher later if necessary.

I don't know Joba's salary or arbitration eligibility. I just know I'd pass.

Luke: You will trade Joba now.

Bib Fortuna Cashman: I will trade Joba now.

I am not sure anyone in the Yankees organization believes that Blanton would be a better starter for them than Joba.

Just put Joba in the Yankees rotation, save a ton of money and put Mitre where he belongs (some team that doesn't care about winning games)

I'm still betting that Joba and Montero get packaged somewhere.

The Yanks are just waiting to see if Martin comes around and can give them a little time to get that next catcher through the minors.

Meh,...I could be wrong.

You could be right , but for the wrong reasons.

They already have their C of the future, Montero is not a C, will be Jorge's replacement at DH if he stays with the club.

The problem with holding Montero and not dealing him soon is that you run the risk of exposing the fact that he may not be a servicable defensive catcher. I'm sure there are no secrets at this level, only confirmation of information. But you can always hope that someone is desperate enough to take a shot at catching lightening in a bottle and will look past some defensive limitations in exchange for the bat (Jeff Clement?)

Filling the DH slot is the least of your worries.

You might end up with Arod or Jeter there in a year or two. Although it would be nice to find that you can keep the two youngsters and that Montero could be that 3rd catcher on your roster in case of emergency while being your primary DH.

Austin Romine is closer but most consider Gary Sanchez to be a little better, but a year further away. Neither is expected to contribute this season.

Montero could be moved to first, but that is covered for awhile. When he is traded that is probably where he winds up.

I believe the yanks have enough trade bait to land someone much better than Blanton. So much, in fact, that they could land Felix.

Give the King a couple more months of loser baseball in Seattle this summer, and he may be willing to waive his no-trade clause to the Yanks in exchange for a few million bucks.

If he does, the Yanks could just package up four or five of the following with Montero and you have a deal: Nunez, Montero, Banuelos, Nova, Culver, Laird, or Joba. It would take less if the Yanks take Bradley too, a little more if they take Figgins; both are no longer wanted by the Ms.

A King's ransom? Exactly. Too much? Maybe not. The Yanks get the premier starter they can't get anywhere else, the one they need now to compete, without giving up a Hughes or any other key cog to this years team.

The Ms? They get some key building blocks to go with Smoak, Ackley, and Pineda. They would be much worse right now, but in three years they would be much better than if they keep Felix.
