Furcal and Thornton

Every morning that I wake up, there's always something surprising on the wire.

Furcal has a nagging sore wrist. Says it hurts every time he tightens his grip on the bat. Mattingly doesn't think it's serious... stay tuned.

Sounds like Thornton has some company closing in Chicago. He seemed like a solid choice just 2 weekends ago in the main... 2 blown saves later and the dreaded committee .... 2 blown saves in St. Louis and Ryan Franklin owners still look okay.

That was BS #3 for Franklin last night. That's alot of BS after 8 games played!

If all you do is look at the boxscore (as some claim) then you are not getting the whole picture.

Thornton got ALOT of help from his defense (Hey Lucky Pierre, catch much?) Rasmus dropped a catchable deep flyball that would've been the last out in the game, and thus make Franklin a hero instead of goat.

I think managers realize that team defense is an important component in any pitcher's success/failure.

Franklin looked horrible....

What is in the boxscore is exactly correct....but, it looked 100x worse in real life.

If you watched the game...

then you seen 37 year old Miquel Tejada foul off 36 pitches before he rocked the game winning hit. The ball was 4 feet away from being a homer.

Rasmus had a VERY hard catch to make on the warning track. It was no can of corn.

I don't see any excuse for Frankiln. He looked horrible.

He might turn it around and be fine the rest of the year...Who knows? but....last night, was a fail.

Pierre should have caught the ball on the next better, but that ball was a couple feet from going out. Thornton did not look good for those 3 batters at all.

[/QUOTE]The first two balls were definitely smoked, but the Pierre ball has to be caught. It wasn't like he was jumping up against the wall; it was barely at the track. If he catches it, there's a man on 2nd with 2 outs and maybe he gets the save and there's no story. Combined with the fact that Pierre did the same thing the game before on an even easier play (and that there also was a Ramirez error in that inning), Thortnon's beeen a bit unlucky, though that's not to say he's been good. He has, however, been outstanding the last three years and there's no reason to think he won't excel if they leave him in there. Despite his reputation, Ozzie is one of the few managers that seems to inherently understand that it's silly to overreact to a such sample size , so we'll see.

That said, I'm thinking Thornton = Chad Qualls II at this point.

fyi - in the 2 innings i saw, britton had a couple "smoked" balls that were caught for outs. if they got by, his pitching line would have been different...

Also, I believe Ozzie's reputation is for speaking his mind, w/ no apologies. He is extremely loyal to his players and is not going to replace the guy who is being paid closer $ in April.

Rasmus ran a long way to deep left-center to catch that ball, but to call it a "VERY hard catch" is ridiculous. He is a professional. The ball hit his glove. What more do you want?

I'm no fan of Franklin. I'd take him before Rodney/Lyon/TB Closer, etc but he is not on any of my teams. I'm just a believer in calling it like it is and Rasmus dropped the final game winning out.

I owned Matt Thornton all of last year and waited for him to get an opportunity all year while Jenks sucked.

This year I have Sergio Santos who has looked pretty darn good and am rooting against Thornton.

Come on Ozzie ole Chest needs Santos...

I don't blame Ozzie for trying Sale today, but he was a fail too.

Thornton has been outstanding the last couple years, but he isn't right now. 0-4 is not a meaningless sample size, imo.
