A Day in the Life...

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Mon Apr 25, 2011 6:23 am

I was gonna do a 'Stuff'' thing, probably still will, but I wanted to talk about being quietly pisssed.

There cannot be another hobby in the world that makes us as quietly pisssed as fantasy baseball does.

The trouble is, it can happen at anytime of day. We like listening to the radio while showering in the morning- "In baseball last night, Albert Pujols pulled up lame while running down the first base line...." ARRGGH!

Our wife says, "Good Morning". Just as cheerfully we say, "Good Morning". she asks if we took care of the trash. We tell her yes. We're glad that the trash is picked up on Mondays. It gives us an excuse to get up early and put in the lineups for the week. Pujols was just starting to hit! And to make matters worse, no updates since he doesn't play till Tuesday. ARRGGH!

"Pancakes?" "Sure, Sweetie"

We've also found out that another player has bereavment leave. Damn, why can't these people die in the off season?

We have the only hobby in the world where if some old guy dies in Puerto Rico, it affects us.

During the day, we go through the motions of our jobs and daily life, all the while thinking that Willie Bloomquist could still produce if Gibson will just give him more chances.

And what about Travis Hafner? How long can we keep starting him? He looks good. Maybe, too good. Travis being Manny? We hope not.

AJ Burnett has a double start this week. Should we start him?

He gets great run support and hasn't been too bad. Geez, we just know if we start him that he'll look more like Carol Burnett than AJ.

On the road home, listening to a ballgame, our pitcher has walked our hitter.

No good ever comes of that!

Hit a home run or strike out wuddja! C'mon!

A car honks, a voice screams and asks where we learned to drive.

"Screw you!"

"Our pitcher sucks almost as bad as you!"

We know we shouldn't have yelled, but it feels a lot better than the quietly pisssed facade for home and work. He'll probably mistake it for road rage anyway, unless, he's a fantasy player, in which case, maybe, he'll understand.

We get home from work, hugs and kisses for the family. Somehow a balance between following the ongoing games and being a family guy must be met.

Your player striking out with the bases loaded and nobody out, has us churning.

But, we can't show it to the kids, or more importantly, to the wife. If the wife finds out that we'd rather be rooting on players that are playing in different cities, rather than watching an animated tv special with the kids on the couch, our father/husband license could be revoked.

With the kids safely tucked in bed, we check the computer. No home runs, no stolen bases, and our pitcher was wild

(Ever notice how baseball people never call a pitcher 'wild' anymore?

No, now he has lost his command.

What a load!

Command this! We say.)

and walked in three runs.

On top of that, we bid on Ryan Roberts in every league and didn't get him in one!

PLEASE KIIRK! PLAY BLOOMQUIST screams in our mind!

"Time to go to bed, honey".

"Ok, be right there", we say, while wondering what else can go wrong.

In bed, our wife mentions what a lovely day it was and hopes tomorrow will be even better.

We kiss her tonight, and pray she's right.

Willie Bloomquist is the biggest scam perpetrated on the American public since One-Hour Martinizing.

I'm on the Ryan Roberts train though. Thinking about getting neck tattoo.

Not the point....but I still don't agree.

Millie Bloomquist is in the Emily Bonafacio family of players, fool me once, but never again.

Corey Patterson fools people every year....

It did. My bad. I'm horrible with references.

Drives my son-in-law, crazy. He does lines from movies and tv shows that go over my head.

As a father of 2 young kids and a wife who always has dinner on at 5:00pm... I can totally relate to this one Dough!

Whenever there is an early game that I can follow from work, its a double edged sword of course. If my pitcher is great, flowers for the wife and candy for the kids... if he gets rocked for 8 er's in 3.1 innings and doesn't record a k... Sorry I am grumpy honey, I simply had the longest day ever... :D

This is the world we live in and I honestly think I would live 5 years longer if I didn't watch the baseball games live... ;)

Let's play who would you rather have-

I'll ask the question, answer it, then you guys and gal can chime in with agreement or disagreement....

Pineda or Ogando?

I'd rather have Pineda for the long run. I know, he plays on a worse team and will have his innings limited. But, he is a horse. He's a strike thrower with a wide assortment of pitches. He throws in a pitchers park and soon will have League and Aardsma closing out his games.

Ogando is like a pony, not a horse. He'll be a great flavor of the month, but I can see him wearing down, probably as soon as the end of May. He'll lose a couple miles off his fastball and in that ballpark, a couple of miles off the fastball is noticeable with mid-deep fly balls becoming home runs.

Heyward or Stanton?

Both these guys get nicked up. Chipper-nicked. Enough to stay out of the lineup without us knowing. Frustrating.

Heyward is a little more toolsy. He has less power than Stanton, but who doesn't?

Heyward will steal more bases, hit for the higher average, and injuries set aside, should contribute comforably in every category. Like Stanton, he is still learning, but more ahead of the curve than Stanton is. He seems right on the cusp of figuring things out. Give me Heyward.

Stanton is going to have some boffo games. You know the 5-3-4-6 box score with two home runs. Good for a week of stats. Unfortunately, he'll have the weeks that he has had up to this point as well.

He'll whale on certain pitchers. These pitchers are the ones dumb enough to throw it in his zone. He still whiffs on too many pitches outside of the zone and, until this is corrected, he'll be more like Mark Reynolds and not ARod. A stud in the making, but, still in the making.

Ortiz or Guerrero?

I won't own either next year and it's hard to imagine either of them getting a contract next year for anything close to what THEY THINK they're worth.

Guerrero moves like a gazelle....in the mouth of a tiger.

He is swinging at even more pitches this year. Easily leading baseball. He has only taken 86 pitches in 83 at bats! His obp is the same as his average since he has failed to draw a walk. Once on the bases, he is a road block. He has hit three home runs this year, but only scored seven runs while hitting in the middle of a lineup.

Ortiz is no faster, but has more help around him in the lineup. His swing looks much more fluid than Guerrero's, and truth be told, he moves on the field like he is younger than Vlad.

Ortiz has taken 14 bb's already this year and has five more runs scored than Vladdy, even though the Sox have slumped around him.

I'll take Big Papi.

But, next year with Posada, Matsui, Thome, Hafner, Guerrero, and Ortiz another year older and waning and no other position to play, And with guys like Martinez and Lind taking up a position while dh'ing, it could be the first year where our drafts are virtually free of the dh only hitter.

Most likely, it'll only last a year. Billy Butler is a liability at 1b and with Hosmer being the future, Butler looks prime to be a dh for a long time.

....I just discovered that this is going in the Day in the life thread instead of it's own, but, I am not starting over , so I'll just hijack my own thread :D

These quotes from organizations are so misleading. What, are some of these guys in our leagues?

Morneau and Young have the flu, no, not really.

Contreras just needed a day off. No, not really.

'I'm trying to find room in the lineup for the sparkplug'- Kirk Gibson

And, again, not really.

Where there's smoke, there's a liar!

"You don't listen to me!" The bullpen just gave up two of Nolasco's earned runs to ruin his nice start. I can't be forgiven for missing an idle comment about the weather during a catastrophe like this?

Agree on Pineda and Ortiz. Stanton is too good for Heyward to compare.
Chance favors the prepared mind.

[/QUOTE]So what you're trying to say is that you really believe that a 30 point combined total for three leagues is going to hold up the rest of the season after not even a month of play?! You just keep deluding yourself if it makes you feel better. And may I point out, that if you had kept the bet as it was originally made based upon the two leagues, you'd be losing to me right now. So just be happy that you lucked into me agreeing to include the third league otherwise you'd be talking out the other side of your ass right now. There's a good chance that I will beat you in two of three leagues we're in together, despite all of your supposed greatness and self-aggrandizement, with only the third to save you your money. We're a long way from the end of the season, so just keep letting your self-confidence get the best of you. This game has a way of being very humbling. So enjoy the appetizer of early season success, but in the end, the only thing on the dessert menu for you will be a slice of humble pie :D
