He'll be overbid just like every mid-season high profile call up.....why do I feel Justin Smoak deja vu?
By the way, Smoak was going for 400+ last year at this time.

You're right about Smoak, but if I recall correctly the closer shakeup situation was much less serious last year than the first month of this season. I'd bet the average FAAB budget remaining this year is less than last year at this point.

The Baltimore pen was as big a mess as the Cards pen. Wood, Nathan, Lidge, Street, etc. Detroit, Minnesota, Seattle all had early pen questions.
Even more importantly who cares about bullpen issues? There's been a ridiculous amount of 3B injuries this year. For those who had Zim, Panda, Freese, etc. this is the replacement corner of their dreams.
Also, let's not forget the week Smoak came up, Ike Davis also came up. You didn't have to go all in for Smoak. You could make a large, but not all-in bid for each of the two rookie 1st basemen and have a decent shot at landing one of them. Who are you landing this week if you need a corner and you miss out on Hosmer? I think it's also pretty safe to say that neither Smoak or Davis was the level of prospect Hosmer is considered.
I just checked and saw that there were multiple 500+ bids on Smoak & Davis last year. I'm guessing you'd better go all-in or close if you want to be sure to land him.
I'm not pulling a Gekko here, just calling it how I see it.

Yikes!! Please don't put me in that class of hype artists. I just did my homework to see if what it would take to buy him for my leagues where he's available.......
Top 5 bids for Ike Davis 4/26/10:
471
503
519
531
536
Top 5 bids for Justin Smoak 4/26/10:
505
513
515
557
613!!!!
No min bets there.
I also don't expect to see Gekko joining this thread. He was heavily invested in Kila, I'm sure he's hoping noone else thinks Hosmer's worthy of a significant bid.

And none of those bids was worth what was spent. Smoak was an absolute waste of money and Ike Davis was decent but no better than having someone like Garrett Jones or Lyle Overbay.
I am curious about what people really expect from Hosmer.

Two differences though.
First, while both Smoak and Davis were intriguing prospects, neither came with the pedigree or universal high ranking that comes with Hosmer. Baseball America has him as their 8th best prospect in baseball, Minor League Analyst has him as the 8th best fantasy prospect, and Sickels has him as the 7th best. He comes with better credentials than either of the two last year.
Secondly, because of how the corner positions have been diluted this year by injury, there's more teams with a need for a Hosmer type. Just this week, three more corners bit the dust long term.
I just see a perfect storm for crazy bids. I could be wrong, we'll see on Sunday.
I will say that though I'll be making bids on him where I can use an upgrade at corner, I can't afford to make a 500 play on him for any of the teams he'll be available for me.......nor would I even if I could afford to.

Disagree re Smoak and Hosmer. Smoak was just as hyped (13th ranked prospect in MLB by BA in a MUCH better class of players - Strasburg, Posey, Stanton, Heyward, Santana, and Feliz were all in top 10; Hosmer is 8th) and was going to play in a hitter's park in a great lineup.
Smoak has every bit the pedigree that Hosmer does. It's just that baseball is generally hard for all 22 year old rookies - especially when it comes to power numbers.
I think he's going to be awesome eventually. I doubt I will be able to afford him this year because, I agree, he will be overbid.

I'll save my money for down the road when its needed... 20 or so more weeks to go.... no 21 yr old rookie is worth anything near 100.00 - I hope he goes for 500.00 or more in every league I'm in... Besides Braun a few years ago, no 21 yr old ever had major stats being called up in May for the rest of the season, Not Arod, Not Griffey, no one.... i suppose those bidding upwards of 500 are doing so to correct drafting choices.
