Wright and the Mets are getting a second opinion on his back as it's feared that he's suffered a stress fracture, Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports. Wright had been dealing with a neck/shoulder injury, but this absence comes completely out of the blue. Willie Harris starts Monday and the Mets will now need to figure who will play third and bat third daily. The Mets didn't make any moves with Wright as far as the DL goes Monday, we'll wait further details from the team as the second opinion should reveal a course of action regarding his treatment.

With the latest injuries to Chipper and Wright, it makes these 3b the best current 3b in the National League-

Aramis Ramirez

Placido Polanco

Scott Rolen

Chris Johnson

Casey McGehee

Chase Headley

With the possible exception of McGehee, and possibly Ramirez if he finds power, none of these players will go in the first 10 rounds of our drafts next year.

Just got this from Sportsline...

David Wright, 3B NYM

News:

Mets 3B David Wright has been diagnosed with a lower back stress fracture and is headed for the disabled list, the Mets announced on Monday. He is expected to miss several weeks with the injury, though an official timetable has yet to be determined. Wright, who was held out of the Mets lineup last Thursday due to lingering back pain, had gone 1 for 9 over the weekend against Houston.

Analysis:

Wright was given two consecutive days off late last week in the hopes that he could recover from some lingering back pain. He declared himself ready to play over the weekend, but he was sent for a precautionary MRI. The results revealed the injury and now Wright is expected to miss significant time. He had been receiving back treatment since suffering a collision with Carlos Lee of the Astros on April 19. The problem had been clearly affecting him at the plate and now the severity of the diagnosis clearly indicates why. There was an indication that Wright might miss months with the injury, but that has yet to be determined. Manager Terry Collins told reporters on Monday that he is not sure exactly how he will fill the void at third base, but that he does not expect to use Daniel Murphy there. Willie Harris, Justin Turner and Chin-Lung Hu could be in the mix.

He won't be out a significant amount of time. Supposedly 10 days of rest followed by a resumption of baseball activities.

I'll have to make due with Wilson Betimet, Orlando Cabrera (with Lowrie moving to 3rd, is he eligible yet?), and Macier Izturis for my NYC Main Event, my Ultimate, and my Auction squad 'til he gets back.

Still, the 3B hex this year has gotten a little bit outta hand. Crazy's probably a more accurate description.

I fully expect that he will need back replacement surgery, which will be announced in August after several aborted rehab attempts. See, e.g., every Mets injured player since 2007.

The Mets are dl'ing him, right?

1o days of rest and then resuming baseball activities is worth adding the extra player, no?

Heck, if it were my franchise player, I'd dl him to make sure he doesn't get antsy or feels he has the need to come back a little early.

glenn - i'm no dr, but if he has a stress fracture, i'd plan on him being out for a while...

from the web...

A stress fracture, medically known as Spondylolysis, is the most common overuse injury of the lower back in sports.

In most cases, complete rest is the treatment of choice. This would usually be for a period of 6 weeks, to allow the bone to heal.

Glenn is a true Mets fan.

He still believes in their best case scenarios.

Bad news: No way Wright only misses 10 days.

Good news: Lowrie is 3B eligible!

just guessing that stealing bases won't be in wright's future whenever he returns (too much potential to re-injure back).

There could be a new 3b eligible player in a couple of weeks. Albert Pujols has one game there and is starting there tonight.

I made this argument for Yankees fans when asked how Pujols could mix in with Teixeira.

The Cardinals seem to be making it easier for Pujols to be taken by the big money teams next year.

Interesting.
