NFBC Weekly Profile - Gary Cutler

Post by Tom Kessenich » Tue Jun 21, 2011 4:51 am

By the time Gary Cutler got to his Double Play Live team in the NFBC, he already had six teams under his belt. So he decided to seek out some help from respected NFBC veterans to assess the work he had done to that point.

“I have to give credit to fellow NFBC players like Mike Diedrich, Dave Van Der Stuyk, Jack Haan, John Pasma, all the guys in the Premature E-Draftulation for their willingness to be open and honest with their analysis of my previous teams,” Cutler said.

The advice Cutler received from those fellow NFBC competitors definitely paid off when it came to assembling his Double Play Live team. It’s worked so well that Cutler entered Week 13 first in his league and third in the event’s overall standings.

“I tried to build a plus batting average early by drafting Ryan Braun, Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia,” he said. “Then I would add low batting average guys with good counting stats later. I also went early for the starting pitchers that I was targeting in the Main Event that I missed – Joel Pineda and Brandon Beachy.

“It was really tough drafting in the even rounds with Dave Van Der Stuyf and John Pausma drafting two players between my picks as we had been battling for the same players in the auction the night before.”

A strong draft and some shrewd free-agent pickups such as Alexi Ogando and Fernando Salas have combined to put Cutler’s team in strong contention after the first three months of the season. What needs to happen the rest of the way for his team to make a run at the national title?

Simple.

“I currently have four starting pitchers on the DL – Tommy Hanson, Clay Buchholz, Beachy and Aaron Harang,” he said. “So health will be a huge issue to maintain my early start.”

Cutler, 49, lives in Warren, MI and is engaged with four children. He has been playing fantasy baseball for nearly 20 years and has been playing in the NFBC since 2005.

Gary's a great competitor.

One of those guys that takes little time off during the off year. He is always trying to learn more about our game.

It's paying off. Way to go, Gary.

Good luck the rest of the way.

Great job so far, Gary!

KJ, I didn't know there were various levels of being engaged. Is that why I'm still single?

OK, there are hundreds of other good reasons for that.
