The Dodgers File For Bankruptcy

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Jun 27, 2011 3:59 am

I'm sure there are long-time Dodger fans from Los Angeles and even the Brooklyn days that are finding today's news just unfathomable: The Dodgers have filed for bankruptcy. It's hard to believe, but it appears it's more of a move to fight a new battle with Bud Selig and Major League Baseball. Look for this one to end up in the courts for a long, long time.

Here's the story from ESPN.com:

Comparing this to other sports, it would be like seeing a headline: The Green Bay Packers have filed bankruptcy; or The Boston Celtics have filed bankruptcy; or The Montreal Canadians have filed bankruptcy. It's almost unfathomable that a historic franchise like the Dodgers could file bankruptcy during the season. What a mess.

I'm sure many of you are feeling this news first-hand. Is it as bad and as ugly as it seems or isn't this a big deal? Just looking for some thoughts. Amazing. Good luck to the Dodgers' fans because this really has been a cruel season all around.

I assume Selig is getting good advice and would win a potential lawsuit, but Selig's responsible for McCourt getting the team in the first place.

When the Dodgers went up for sale, Selig wanted to keep salaries down by having a "broke" owner of a major market team buy the team. However, he underestimated how "broke" McCourt was.

Hopefully, the team will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, and Selig won't be able to engineer another back room deal.

As a decedent of a fan from the Brooklyn days - I think it just confirms what my dad and his friends thought (or wished) would have happened all along. Just wish it would have happened under O'Malley ownership.
