Derek Jeter is nearing 3,000 hits in his career.

I admire Jeter and how he has kept his nose clean and has been the heart of the Yankees throughout the last part of the past century and the first years of the current century.

Getting 3,000 hits is a testament to longevity, avoiding injury, and being consistent in getting base hits.

With all this, I am asking myself why I don't give a rat's ass?

Maybe it's the media ramming it down my throat.

Maybe it's the 'churning' of the record. By the time most players achieve 3,000 hits they are in the twilight of their career.

Maybe it's my non-obsession with even numbers. Jeter will be the 27th player to get 3,000 hits, but he is already the 27th player to have 2,997. I wouldn't think any less of him if he were to not reach 3,000 hits.

Babe Ruth, Mel Ott, and Frank Robinson came up a little short of 3,000 hits. Most players even nearing 3,000 hits are in the Hall of Fame.

Only two players that have 3,000 hits are NOT in the Hall. Pete Rose and Raffy Palmeiro.

The current players behind Jeter in hits are:

Ivan Rodriguez- 2842 hits

Omar Vizquel- 2831 hits

Alex Rodriguez- 2762 hits

Johnny Damon- 2662 hits

Chipper Jones- 2562 hits

Vladimir Guerrero- 2511 hits

Each can make their own case for the Hall of Fame. But, I won't be on pins and needles waiting for any of these players to reach 3,000 hits.

Maybe we should start 'Career Fantasy Baseball' to make records like these more exciting. The categories can still be the same, but when drafting, we draft with the thought of whether these players can maintain careers over long periods of time, while we rack up points for milestones like 3,000 hits.

The drawback being that it would take years and years before winners collect their money :D

I'll see you in 2027 to collect. :D

I'll take Freddie Freeman for 2,500 hits.

Same for Eric Hosmer.

I'll let somebody else draft Moustakas.

I'll take......

Ike Davis for 500 homers,

Jose Reyes for 1000 steals,

David Wright for 400/400 of each.

I'd go higher but didn't want to sound like a homer.

You won't sound like much of a 'homer' when Reyes and Wright are on different teams next year! ;) :D

Such jealousy from the non-Mets fan contingent......

My next few draft picks......

Angel Pagan for 300/300,

Fernando Martinez for 400 homers,

Daniel Murphy for 2500 hits,

Josh Thole for 2000 hits,

Bobby Parnell for 300 saves,

Dillon Gee for 250 wins,

Matt Harvey for 350 wins and 4000 K's (we will have reserves won't we?)

:D

I'd go higher but didn't want to sound like a homer. I'll take Ike Davis for the Kevin Maas career path.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks the Jeter injury was BS just to set up a situation where he might hit the 3000th at Yankee Stadium?

:D  Shouldn't that team have 60 wins already this season with those "studs"?

Something else for the press to get goo goo about.....

As an aside, Tony Gwynn playing for San Diego, had his 3,000th hit as far from home as one can get. He got it in Montreal.

Although there was a sparse crowd it was still special for Gwynn. It was his Mom's birthday and she was in attendance.

As another aside, he also had hit number 2,000 on his Mom's birthday.
At least. My guess is that if Wright, Davis, Reyes, & Santana were healthy all season, we'd be looking at possibly the first undefeated team in history.

The Yankees are just a little bit more concerned with history at Yankee Stadium than actually playing to win, but anyway someone PM'ed me this link to Keith Olbermann's blog where he also proposes a conspiracy so you'll have to be content with me being one of only TWO people who support the theory:

It's about half way down the page, the post with Jeter in the title. I wouldn't go quite as far as him, but I think the Yanks were ecstatic to have an excuse after an injury he might have played through.
Quite possibly one of the dumbest things I have ever read. Obviously he did not see the injury or pay any attention to the fact that Jeter was down in Florida working out the injury. Why the hell would he be down there doing that if he was faking the injury? Also anyone believing that nonsense, also has no clue about Jeter's makeup. While he never actually claims that he believes what you do, it is hard to believe it is possible there would be two people that could possibly think that. It takes all kinds to keep things interesting though.

Also anyone believing that nonsense, also has no clue about Jeter's makeup.I have to agree. Jeter is a stand-up guy, and while phony injuries in baseball are a very rare thing, even if they were more common I just know that Derek Jeter of all people would NEVER...What? What's that? You don't say. Oh...
