NFBC Weekly Profile - Dave Potts

Post by Tom Kessenich » Tue Jul 26, 2011 4:59 am

As we zero in on the beginning of August, the true contenders in the National Fantasy Baseball Championship are beginning to show their colors. At this point of the season, it’s time to stop hoping your team can compete for the $100,000 grand prize and start believing it can.

Dave Potts has that type of team.

His first weekend Main Event team enters play on Tuesday in 10th place in the Overall Standings. With the competition beginning to intensify, Potts knows that now is the time when the run at a strong spot in the Overall Standings – and even the national title – becomes a reality.

“My team has stayed pretty healthy so far,” he said. “My top nine picks have all been mostly healthy and produced at or above expectations.

“Good health the rest of the way is the biggest key for my team, as is the case for everyone. Kevin Youkilis has been OK, but could really use a big couple months from him. Either Bobby Abreu or Aubrey Huff coming to life would be a big help as well. I was pretty high on Andres Torres, and haven’t seen much yet from him. As long as Cliff Lee, Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum keep pitching well, the rest of my staff has to just be decent to keep me strong in pitching.”

Through the first 17 weeks of the season, Potts’ Draft Day approach has paid big dividends.

“I wanted to draft a strong infield, planned to focus on first base and third base early and get three good starters,” he said. “Prince Fielder, Youkilis, Jimmy Rollins, Ben Zobris and Michael Young in the first seven picks set up a solid infield. Lee, Greinke, Marcum accomplished the three solid starters. I thought I could get a decent outfield late. It’s still my weak point, but good enough so far.”

It’s also helped to get one of this season’s standout surprise stories at a discounted price.

“The fact that Brandon Beachy got the starting job in Atlanta and has held it at this level is a pleasant surprise,” he said. “That was a bonus of this being a first-weekend draft. I got him in Round 28. Week two, after we knew he had won the job, he was going in mid-teens.”

The 36-year-old Potts knows he’s not only in a battle for prime position in the Overall Standings but within his Las Vegas league as well. He currently holds 4.5-point lead over Keith Voight’s second-place team.

“I’ve been battling (Voight) for weeks in a first place see-saw,” Potts said. “The two of us have a pretty strong lead for the Top 2 spots, but not lead is safe in these leagues. FAAB bidding in this league has been strong. You’re not able to sneak anyone by at a discount.”

A four-year veteran of the NFBC, Potts has been playing fantasy baseball since 1999. He lives in Auburn, AL with his wife and two children. When he’s not buried into the highs and lows of his fantasy teams, he finds time for his other pleasure in life – music.

“I have been touring and recording music for 15 years,” he said. “I’ve released eight CDs. I have a song on my last album that I think baseball fans might be interested in. It is called, ‘If I Broke The Record.’ It is a song written from the perspective of a minor league ballplayer in the steroid era.”

Good writeup. I had no idea he was a musician. Good stuff. I particularly like your haircut, Dave.
Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? “It is I, proclaiming victory, mighty to save.” Isaiah 63:1
