Last night a friend asked me to don the GM hat on some major league teams.

He fired potential trades at me and I offered up the advantages and disadvantages to each side.

One trade that he came up was interesting.

Hunter Pence for Jose Iglesias.

Pence is the known player and would probably thrive a la Jason Bay for the Red Sox.

Iglesias is going to be a major leaguer. No doubt about it.

The only question is whether he'll be a good enough hitter to hit near the top of the lineup or be a good field, no hit shortstop.

The Astros will be going nowhere for the next few years whether they have one player or the other. If I were them, I'd rather build on a shortstop who has more years under control than an above average outfielder who will be gone in a couple of years.

The Red Sox would add another hitter in a lineup that is already packed and if Pence thrived, the Red Sox thinking of Bay, would probably not let him get away.

I have a probable warped opinion of Ubaldo Jimenez, so I won't offer my opinion on the following trade, but my buddy asked about Ubaldo for Banuelos and Montero.

Montero has locker room problems and some have already questioned his 'Yankeeness', so it won't be surprising to see him moved.

They covet Banuelos though, so I can't see it happening.

Are there some trades you'd like to see or thought about?

If I were Theo, I would package Iglesias, Reddick or Kalish and Doubront for Pence and send JD Drew to the airport to pick him up.

I like what the Jays did to get Colby Rasmus. At the same time, I don't think the Cards were gypped. Jackson should be great in their rotation and Rzep is not to be given up on yet.

Colby's dad is most likely a happy fella.

Carlos Beltran got most of the trade attention, but his deal was sort of ho-hum.

Duda owners could be the big winners since the Mets did not receive an outfielder in the trade.

The dominoes have started to fall.....

Beltran deal may be ho-hum as far as 2011 NFBC goes, but there are not many teams that could have given the Mets someone like Wheeler, TINSTAAP aside.

It could be a good deal for the Mets.

It has to be tough for a G.M. to put all his eggs in one big arm.

A Wheeler dealer in every sense.

To put this in fantasy terms, especially in dynasty leagues, I have found the best way to get an ace to anchor my staff is to draft five young guys, hoping one develops into an SP1, another an SP2 or SP3 and then i try to trade the others before the shine is off.

So I don't look at it like putting all the eggs into one basket as much as throwing the Wheeler egg into the pitching basket, increasing the odds that one hatches.

Or, to put it in parlance of which I am all too familiar, you need to apply and interview for multiple jobs to get an offer....

I think Rajai Davis' owners are disappointed today. I know I am. I need to start looking for some more playable speed as Davis may still get some pr oppportunities but tough to write him in that lineup card on Mondays and Fridays.

Kid Blue Jay (GM) is becoming one of the top GM's in baseball. He has been as aggressive as any GM in the last 18 months. I like his approach.

He was already sitting against righties, making him essentially worthless in fantasy ball. Now it is much more likely he gets dealt somewhere where he gets a lot more PT. if he sticks around it will be interesting to see who sits

against lefties; davis, snider or thames.

[/QUOTE]I would have preferred this package over the package that Houston received for Pence.

But, it probably was never offered to the Astros.

It's a no-win situation for Ed Wade, the GM of the Astros. Pence is the Astros best player and fans don't understand the practice of trading their best player for prospects. The press didn't help either by throwing Dominick Brown's name around when he was probably never a thought in the deal.

Pence is in the same situation as Jason Bay. Bay was the best player on bad teams in Pittsburgh and San Diego and shined while playing with Boston. It'll be interesting to see Pence taking over the Jayson Werth role in the Phillies lineup. It made over 100 million dollars for Werth. It could do the same for Pence.

The next big dominoes should be the pitchers.

Just a guess, but after the Rangers pulled Adrian Beltre from Angel clutches. I'll guess that the Angels do the same to them and sign Heath Bell.

There is no way I would give up much for Bell if I was a GM. He is not all that good right now. I would much prefer to try and get Adams.

But, real GM's don't see players as we see them.

Unfortunately both are having similar seasons in the standings.
