McCarver's Island

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Sat Sep 03, 2011 12:01 pm

You know that scene in tv shows and movies where an older guy is yelling at the tv while watching a sporting event.

That's me.

Unlike most of my brehtren portrayed on film, I'm not yelling for the home team. I don't have a home team.

No, most of the time I'm yelling at the announcers and their stupidity.

I know how that sounds. It implies that I think I'm smarter than the broadcasters.

I'm not.

Well maybe, Hell, I don't know.

I know that 'Gilligans Island' is an older show and that some of you haven't seen it.

But, not even a show as stupid as that, had me yelling at the tv. No matter how bad the story line, we still had Ginger and Mary Ann.

Umm, Mary Ann.

There is no MLB package during the time that Fox shows its game of the week.

We are stuck on Tim McCarver's Island.

In watching McCarver on the Fox game, he is actually worse than Gilligan. Gilligan knows he's Gilligan.

McCarver thinking he is the Professor, but sadly, comes across as Gilligan.

In the game currently on, the Rangers are visiting the Red Sox. I have already screamed at McCarver twice and 'Walla Walla Harumped' him several times.

McCarver wondered aloud (he does everything aloud) why there are no shifts for right handed hitters. He stated that there were pull right handed hitters as well as lefty, but no shifts.

Well Gilligan....

If fielders did shift for a right handed hitter, the defensive teams weakest arm, the 2b, would be farther from the 1b. The 1b himself could not join in the shift since he still has to be close enough to first base to receive the throw from one of the infielders.

Also when shifting for a lefty, fielders are closer to 1b, affording the infielders to play deeper. They could not do that vs. a righty.

He also thought that catchers should be given errors instead of passed balls.

Brilliant!

Catchers can handle as many as 200 pitches per game. If they are to be charged an error for each passed ball, then every pitch received would be a 'chance' which would really make fielding percentage a headache.

Also, to penalize a catcher with an error over a crossed up pitch is just nonsense.

But, that is what McCarver is good at.

Nonsense.

Oh well, Like Ginger and Mary Ann, at least we still have the ball game to look at....

But still, we thought we were in for a three hour tour and like the marooned cast of Gilligan's Island, we'll be ever thankful to get off McCarver's Island.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
