Thanks for the patience today. I flipped-flopped players all day long. Hate it when work gets in the way of picking all-time greats. Excellent Pick

I personally had five of Walsh’s years in my top 32.

When this is all said and done, I'd be curious to see other people's rankings. According to my system I only have 3 Walsh seasons in my top 32!
You guys are in deep trouble. While you all have rankings, we are rolling with a whole system. I don't see how we can lose
It works well until everyone takes your picks. I have no rankings.....I'm' shooting for the best available athlete when it's my turn.
Shawn- next year in Vegas you need to teach me how to bowl better. I can't break the 200 barrier. It is embarrassing when you consider my mother was one pin from a 300 game once.

I imagine we might see a guy or two picked with a statistically inferior year because of mid-career position changes. Lots to consider in this here competition. The way that I set up my sheet Fool, I have every individual season both hitting and pitching listed. I then created a formulas and a ranking system to give a score to each player (seperate for hitting and pitching). This allows me to then rank every individual season of all time. And it just so happened, that Big Ed Walsh had 3 of the top 32 individual pitching seasons on my list.

Ed Walsh played 14 seasons, 13 with the Chicago White Sox and one final year with the Boston Braves.

Walsh won 195 games in his career, 168 of which came during a seven year stretch from 1906-12. When I ranked all pitcher seasons, I personally had five of Walsh’s years in my top 32.

According to the Bill James Historical Abstract, Walsh made $7000 in 1908. ($3500 in salary & $3500 in bonus for winning 40 games). Using the Consumer Price Index, that $7000 would be $171,000 today. The 2011 MLB minimum wage is $414,000.

Walsh played in one World Series, 1906 against the 116 win Chicago Cubs. The Sox won the series 4-2. Walsh won games 3 and 5.

Ed had a son named Ed Walsh that also pitched for the Sox. Edward Arthur Walsh wasn’t as good as the old man. During 4 seasons over 5 years, little Ed was 11-24 with a 5.57

Ed Walsh was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946. He was selected by the Old Timers Committee after the writers failed to vote him in on 7 different ballots.

When I first discovered baseball as a kid and heard the term 'spitball'.

I asked my father what a spitball was.

He replied that it was a pitch thrown by a pitcher with spit on it.

When it reached the batter, the spit would land on the batter, preferably near his eye.

My dad didn't know much about baseball.

But I didn't know that then.

Like every kid, I thought my dad knew everything.

I believed a spitball 'spitted' at batters till my teens.

Ty Cobb called the spitter a 'freak pitch', according to a biographer who may have made a lot of his story up.

He went on to say that the only reason it was deemed illegal was because baseball owners had 'sold out to the almighty home run'.

And to keep the party rollin... with the 4th overall pick:

Walter Johnson (1913) -- 36 Wins, 1.14 ERA, .78 WHIP, 243 Ks, 2 Saves, 346 Innings Pitched.

I knew the Big Train wasn't getting to #13, so was waiting for this pick before telling a great Walter Johnson story, which everybody may or may not know.

Johnson was pitching to a young player

Strike 1

Strike 2

The player starts to walk back to the dugout and the ump asked what he was doing. He said he couldn't see the 1st 2 strikes and wasn't going to see the next one either.

Some great stories and characters from back in the day. With today's constant press, I couldn't even think the response if someone did that today.

I've forgotten exactly how this story goes in terms of quotes, so I'll wing it since it concerns another already picked player.

Rogers Hornsby stepped up to the plate against a cocky rookie pitcher. The first pitch was fired in and the umpire called it a ball. The rookie a little peeved at the call snapped at the ball when thrown back by the catcher.

The second pitched whizzed by. Again, the ump called 'Ball'. The rookie threw his hands up. He pumped in the third pitch, again a ball.

"Oh C'MON! Now that had to be a strike!"

The umpire walked halfway to the mound and shouted at the top of his lungs for all in the ball park to hear," Sir, when you indeed throw a strike, Mr. Hornsby will let you know!"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Johnson Great pick. What is interesting about the selection is whether WJ's 1913 was his best fantasy season or 1912. The extra 60Ks from 1912 vs. the 3 wins with slightly better %'s. Tough call. It will be interesting to see how that decision plays out in the end.

That difference in ratios is pretty significant, enough to overcome the k's and 3 wins.
