All Time Draft Thread

Post by Glenneration X » Thu Oct 27, 2011 8:05 am

Having decided to follow Gekko's advice and grab another hitter before he takes them all, I've been set on this player if available over the last half a round. The pool of 40-homer seasons from the shortstop position is a shallow one. There's only been 12 in history. The top 11 spots shared by the same two players. ARod has six of them, but he's already gone. The other five are owned by my player of choice in this round. I'll grab the best of those years. That season....1958. That player.......

R - 119

HR - 47

That situation wouldn't be good for any of the 3. I liked the suggesion of the blind rounds because it seemed to take that scenario out of play. Also, it just seemed kind of cool to me. What your suggesting is a form of collusion. The player in question would be drafting while keeping in mind who might win as a result. Showing favoritism would be collusion even if the player benefiting had no involvement. An example is a hand of cards where a friend of yours knowingly folds the winning hand and allows you to win the pot.

This now feels like every NFL draft I have ever done as the pitcher and hitter I would have taken just went off in order in Vida Blue and Mr. Cub Ernie Banks. So all I can say is nice picks guys.

I will go with the other great left handed pitcher from the same decade.

One of the few players with two nick names:

Louisiana Lightning / The Gator

Ron Guidry 1978

25 W / 1.74 ERA / 248 K / .946 WHIP / 273.2 IP

Congratulations to all of you playing in this GREAT draft. Fun to play and fun to watch.

Now as an outsider I will suggest you use Todd's list idea

1) Everybody sends one list at the same time (everyone emailed when pick 4.15 is made and told to submit by X time)

2) Dan processes the lists and posts the list of players picked in alpha order

3) Dan sends each team an email with the player they got. Team 15 is told to wait X hours before posting the 6.01

This will get the entire round finished with the least emails sent/received and shortest time for the round with the least amount of information for each team (I think)

Party on.............

Ron Guidry 1978

[/QUOTE]1978 was a great season from Guidry. Not only was he a unanimous Cy Young Award winner, but he finished second in the MVP balloting to Jim Rice while getting 8 first place votes.

Last year I saw a show (I think it was on MLB Network) about the ’78 Yankees. One of the segments they had was about Guidry and in particular the June 17 game against the California Angels. At the time, the record for K’s in a 9 inning game was 19. Guidry was mowing down California batters that day and had 15 K’s through 7 innings. In the eighth he picked up one more K. Going into the ninth he needed 3 K’s to tie the record.

It was at that point that something started happening that the TV Show was claiming never really happened before. When the first Angels batter, Dave Chalk, that inning had 2 strikes against them, the fans rose to their feet and started clapping and cheering for a K. And of course when Chalk fanned, the fans went wild. Then it happened again when Joe Rudi went to 2 strikes. The TV Show was saying that it was the first time that fans started cheering during the middle of an at-bat particularly to see a strikeout. And then Rudi fanned giving Guidry 18.

The next hitter, 1979 AL MVP winner Don Baylor, got a hit and then Ron Jackson grounded out.

But that was the beginning of the 2-strike stand up a cheer. (At least according to that show)

Again, it is botherk AT yahoo DOT com

Along with your lists, include your draft number and Message Board name to prevent a mess up on my part.

I will look for the Message Board names that are on Russel's list on the 'League Forum' under 'All Time Draft Results....' subject.

I'd rather not take calls on these picks, it's preferable to have an e-mail trail as proof in case of dispute.

Good luck.

Party on............. I don't agree, but I'm willing to try it in the second blind round if it doesn't go well. I'll let Dan make the call.

If someone is going to be away from the computer, they can send as long as a list as needed. I don't know why time is soundly a factor. I'm pretty sure we will have round 5 done tomorrow which is five rounds in a week.

It sounds like most players want round 16 as the third blind round. I'll make the switch in the rules.

I can't recall the article (poss. Fangraphs) but a writer did a great story about Carlton's '72 season. You would not believe how much he was involved AS A HITTER in winning those 27 games.

Are we sending full list with as many players (9 in my case)as needed to Dan. Or are we just gonna go one pick at a time with back and forth emails to Dan?

Your email makes it sound like you want to do the second of those two options......Is that correct?

So we are not doing the list then. So do we send our one player email then as soon as round 4 ends and then he lets us know if we need to send again or what.

I will send an e-mail simply stating 'you're up in the All time Draft'.

If it is a player already taken, I will send another stating 'Pick again'.

I can also give confirmation that the player selected is yours if you'd like.

Maybe a dumb question but what happens with the running standings / statistics as it pertains to the blind rounds? Category stats are posted and we all can figure out who drafted who?
