While we're waiting on NEAL.

I found four players with the first name of Neal. A couple were of small interest...

Neal Ball played in 1909 and had the first unassisted triple play.

Coincidentally, Neal is the third drafter.

Another Neal is Neal Cotts.

Berman gave him one of my favorite nicknames...

Neal 'Blood' Cotts

Then there was Charley Neal.

He may have been the first black player used as a utility player.

He started for one of the worst teams in history however, Glenn's 1962 New York Mets.

Remember when players would pose in their street clothes still celebrating a victory? :D

Gil Hodges had the 'deluxe' corner locker.

If he comes on tonight, we should ask if he can stay on so we can get past his pick in the next round. It'll help set up tomorrow to move a bit quicker.

I'll mention it to him in my e-mail if he doesn't check in here.

If he checks in here first, I'll need a few minutes to get Shawn and Dave's picks together on paper, then post the names for the round here.

Let's get things kicked off again with the first pick in the 11th round. One of my favorite 5-Tool players to watch growing up. The guy literally had a cannon attached to his right arm and routinely made baserunners look foolish from the right field corner.

Plus he was damn near a 40-40 guy, AND got to wear those stylish Montreal Expo uniforms.

Vladimir Guerrero, OF, Expos

2002 .336 AVG (206/614) / 106 R / 39 HR / 111 RBI / 40 SB

Ahhh.... some intrigue!

Smoltz 1996 (starter- 24w, 276k's- not likely, but possible), 2002 (55 saves, rotten ERA) or 2003 (45 saves, brilliant ERA/whip)....

Same w/ Sutter- the great era/whip/k numbers but only 31 saves from 1977, or 1984's 45 saves and lousy whip/mediocre k's?

Joe Torre- 1966 at catcher or 1971 at 3b (.363 w/ 137rbi!)?

Fisk-- one would think 1977, but anybody punting BA would enjoy that 37hr, 17sb season from 1985.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

While we wait………………………… Some Joe Torre Stuff®

Joe Torre got a hit in his first major league at-bat. On Sept 25, 1960, Torre pinch hit for HOF pitcher Warren Spahn in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Braves were losing 2-0 against the Pirates when Torre drove a single up the middle off Harvey Haddix. Joe was immediately removed for a pinch runner. The Milwaukee Braves eventually won the game 4-2.

In 1961, Torre finished second in the NL ROY award behind Billy Williams. Joe hit .278 with 10HR’s and 42 RBI

Joe hit the first of his 252 career HR’s on May 21, 1961 off Cinn pitcher Joey Jay.

He hit his last one on April 13, 1977 as a member of the NY Mets against St Louis pitcher Clay Carroll.

The pitcher he hit the most homers off (8) was Juan Marichal

Torre was a career .297 hitter, but he only hit over .300 during one month of his career. Joe hit .322 in May.

Joe played in 2,209 games. His teams record in those games, 1102-1102-5.

Joe received MVP votes in six different seasons, winning in 1971. Torre beat out Willie Stargell for MVP, he received 21 of 24 first place votes.

The three pitchers Joe faced the most in his career. All HOF pitchers. Fergie Jenkins (117 PA w .294 BA), Juan Marichal (108 w .350) and Tom Seaver (106 w .280)

The pitcher he 'owned' the most ( 20+ PA)….. Ken Holtzman. He hit .508 off Holtzman over 74 PA’s.

He only had 1 hit off Al Downing over 31 PA’s

On July 21, 1975 Felix Millan of the Mets was 4-4, all singles. Joe Torre was hitting behind Millan that day and grounded into 4 double plays. Torre is the only NL player ever to hit into four DP’s in one game.

Glenn's 23rd round pick---

Mookie Wilson?

or

Frank Taveras?

Since it would have to be a Pirates version of Taveras, I'm betting on the Mookster.... unless Lee Mazzilli pulls off an upset! :D
