DL Moves

Post by Jon_Ashton » Sat Feb 14, 2004 3:51 pm

I know Dominic's original question was only about DL moves, but either Stats, Inc. (the company handling the stats) will compile the stats on a weekly basis or a daily basis, depending upon when the lineups are "locked" weekly or daily. It'd be a mess to try to make an exception only for DL moves, especially since who's to say that someone shouldn't be able to move so-and-so to the bench who's either day-to-day with some injury or maybe hurt and out for a week or so, but not on the DL.

His question necessarily brought up the issue of whether rosters should be locked daily or weekly.

Leaderboard Sports made some specific rules comments that I just wanted to comment on also. It's very important for Greg to carefully consider "unintended consequences" of any rules.

Leaderboard: "A six man bench does not make streaming (rotating pitchers daily) a practical option. A bench balanced enough to cover an injury to a few positions is all that could be gained."

It'd be easy enough to reserve the 5th and/or 6th spots on one's bench for streaming starting pitchers. Probably about one-third or so of the SPs in the Majors won't be on anyone's roster in a 15-team league, so if free agent pickups were allowed on a daily basis (1,000 FA dollars over the course of 6 months comes to about 35 per week for any owner who wanted to stream FA SPs for extra Wins and Ks). As long as FAs were still bid on weekly, rather than daily, I think a 6-man bench would work fine.

Leaderboard: "Or reduce the bench to 3 people to allay fears of the people with lives that someone might actually spend 5 minutes per day working their lineup and gain an advantage."

Again, as long as FA pickups are not allowed daily, because, if they are, dumping more talent back into the pool for $1 temporary "streaming" pickups would have the opposite effect as far allaying the concerns of those with lives.

I kinda like the longer bench because that requires better talent evaluation for your subs at draft time, rather than just being able to grab the best free agent from a pool with decent talent in it when an injury strikes.

"There's no reason to have a bench if you can't use them any more often than the waiver acquisitions. Just dump 90 more players to waivers and let everyone bid on replacements each week."

I like the 29-man roster because it does reward good talent evaluation to start the season, rather than leaving extra talent available for anyone to grab from the pool when needed. I also think it would be fun to play the way Leaderboard suggests, with a 6-man bench you can use for daily lineup moves, as long as daily free agent streaming is not possible, just your own bench players. However, Greg can evaluate that possibility in the future, if he's sensing that we do have 300 dedicated daily junkies who want that. I could see that happening, maybe in a few years.

You best get on board or we'll leave you at the Strip Club Friday night

Wait a minute, that's like throwing Brer Rabbit in the briar patch ;)

I meant we'll leave you home and won't take you to the Strip Club

You're killing me :D

That's alright, after I take your money Thursday AND Saturday night, I'll go by myself (but i won't come back alone)

I still think a viable compromise is to have 2 starting lineups per week, Friday and Monday (corresponds with the normal 2 series each MLB team plays per week).

Accordingly, you should have no problem winning the $100,000. It's going to be very hard for amateurs to compete with you, a professional. Thanks for letting everyone know.
