yet another auction question

Post by hankstr » Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:24 am

The auction rules imply, but don't specifically state, that the entire 24 man (NL) roster must be filled BEFORE the reserve draft. So if I wanted to wait to pick up my second catcher in the reserve draft, I could not do that, correct? Is it indeed true that all positions must be filled before the reserve draft takes place?

I'd also like to ask 'why' if this is true that we need to fill only our active rosters. Seems a good potential strategy to draft a key bench player before a scrub...

Any reason why it can't be draft anyone but leave the draft with a legal roster?

You don't need to draft your active roster before the reserve portion of your draft/auction. So if you want to hold off on your catchers, for example, until the reserve portion you can do that. But you must have an eligible active roster at the conclusion of your draft/auction.

Tom, thanks - could the auction rules be updated to state that explicitly (avoids brawls, mooning, chanting, beer throwing, and otherwise unseemly behavior) at the auction?

We can make an addition but I don't see anywhere in the rules where this would be misinterpreted. If someone could point it out that would be great. Thanks.

There are two places. Procedure B (describing auction procedure), the last sentence:

The process is repeated, with successive team owners introducing players to be bid on, until every roster is filled.

And more importantly, section D:

No owner may bid for a player who qualifies only at a position (or positions) that his/her team has already filled.

It would be impossible to pick up six outfielders and only one catcher during the auction. Now perhaps one could use all $260 on 23 players in an NL league leaving one catcher spot empty (to be filled during reserve draft)

Is this a rule change from last year's auction? As I remember last year we had to have legal lineups after 23 rostered players, whereas that was not the case for the draft.

Thanks, Tom! Now I can proceed with the master plan of bidding $243 on Ken Griffey Jr., one dollar on 17 other guys, and picking up the remaining 6 starters during the reserve draft!

Yes, this is a change to last year's rules.. and I think a very good one. Last year I got caught short on players due to injury and there was nothing I could do about it. At least now I have the opportunity to help myself or hurt myself but it will be my fault instead of a silly structure issue.

(I know, I could have drafted players who didn't get injured... my fault, etc.)

Tom,

I believe you should have to fill your roster before the auction is complete. Extending the logic that you don't have to have a complete team at the end of the auction, you could finish the auction with 19 hitters and 4 pitchers. Finish by picking up 5 pitchers in the reserve round. If you make the rule change and allow incomplete teams to come out of the auction, it is a MAJOR rule change. It doesn't seem right to make such a chance just prior to the auctions. Thanks.

Tom, are you saying that in the NL only Auction as well as the Mixed auction, we do not have to fill our "active" roster before advancing to the reserve rounds?

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It is a known rule in the NL auctions that you must be able to pay $1 at the minimum for a bid on player. If you have 5 open slots on your active roster and you have $5 left, you can only bid $1 on each.

I know that in the draft one could draft 5 straight catchers if so desired but in an NL only auction doesn't each person have to buy 2 catchers??? Now, I am confused. Well I mean more confused than I normally am...

It's my mistake here everyone. Yes you must have an active roster done before the start of the reserve portion. My apologies for any confusion here.

It's a stupid rule that serves no purpose.

Traditionalist! Down with Tom!

Okrent and Waggoner - their laws haunt me to this day and logic is shoved to the background.

Ok, just had to rant for a second.

(Why don't we just have an auction for all 30 positions? The $1 bids turn into a draft anyway if people choose to do it that way. Why not allow for some stinking strategy?)

I'm not opposed to picking up the entire roster in the auction and skipping the reserve round, but it would be a major rules change and be unfair to those that signed up under the origianl/traditional rules.

I would also disagree that there is any more or less stategy using either method.

Tom, no problem on the rules. Of course, I'd prefer it different but the main thing is to ensure complete understanding. Sorry for posing the question but I wanted to be clear.
