Rounds 24 thru 30

I am new to the NFBC this year and not used to drafting rounds 24 to 30 and was wondering what my focus should be in those rounds?

1) you may need to get a player or two to fill out your starting lineup

2) since we are drafting in the middle of spring training, i'd suggest looking at players who are currently in a position battle with another player. typically owners tend to devalue these types of players on draft day

3) backups for your better players. i.e. if u have b.lidge, making a late round selection of tom gordon is permitted

What would you recommend I draft if all 23 positions are filled?

4) player who is injured to begin year but will be healthy during the early part of the year

5) minor leaguer who might get some playing time during the early part of the year

Guys who have the upside to be difference makers and guys who have access to playing time. There will only be 5-7 guys in total who go after that round that really help teams. It is interesting history has shown that there will be more help from undrafted free agents than those later rounds.

Last year's big finds in general after round 23 was Braun, Lincecum (by Less than Dave only), and Pence.

James- hope this helps. Here are the guys who went after round 24 last year that were never exposed back to other owners via waivers in my main event league.

Braun

Meche

JJ Hardy

Linceum

Gallardo

Pence

Aaron Hill

Josh Hamilton

Melky Cabrera

It actually shocked me a bit that so much was out there. I did the same thing last year and it was like JJ Putz only. A couple of other guys like Billinglsey, Pedroia, and Loney were also there but were released.

I think one thing I have seen in my time doing this is guys are more educated on minor leaguers, more patient with holding them, and prepared to pick them earlier.

Thanks for the answers guys. I really thought I was a baseball nerd already but it looks like I am going to need to turn it up a bit. I hope I am ready for the competition. I have never drafted rounds 24-30 so I need hit the books quite a bit more. Really looking forward to Vegas.

James, just a friendly reminder: by season's end, more than 90% of the players drafted in Rounds 24 through 30 will eventually wind up on your league's waiver wire.

Don't beat yourself up too much over finding the next Ryan Braun -- no matter how big of a baseball nerd you may or may not be, the odds are overwhelmingly against it.

James, just remember that you don't have to fill out your 23-man starting lineup with your first 23 picks. You can take your second catcher with your last pick if you want. You can take any player you want in any round, but by the end of Round 30 then you have to have your required 23 starting spots. So planning for Rounds 24-30 can change depending on how your starting spots play out in the first 23 rounds.
