I thought I would get him via FAAB in the two leagues where he was available. Turns out $175 is NOT enough....anyone know of a bid that topped $425 which is what got him in one of the leagues?

He went for $445 in Feb 19th Winner-Take-All League 2.

Mighty Men had the winning bid both in that league and your own.

You would have to be a message board sucker to go $400+.

The hype machine that this MB creates about players is about as accurate as the magazines...pretty poor.

If you buy into this MB too much...you will begin to believe these guys can predict the future...but take a close look at their drafted teams and pickups and drops in this year, as well as years past...and you will see they make plenty of errors. (Just a few less than most! :D )

It's like asking every girl at the club to dance...eventually you get a dance. :D ;)

Lots of activity is one key. Keep fishing for future stars before their value is high...and hopefully don't drop them before their time to shine occurs.

Sorry, Mighty Men...not personal...I like you, and was speaking in general terms.

I already posted before finding out it was you.

Ugh...now I feel like a bad guy. :(

Eh...it will pass. :D :D :D

GOOOOO CUETO!!! :D

I have no problem with Mighty Men throwing $445 at JohnnyC. I'm sure he thinks he can be a difference maker on his team. And who knows the state of his pitching staff. If Cueto was a FA in my league, I'd be throwing mid to high 300's at him.

Jack knows what he is doing, after all, he did buy "future star" Ryan Braun last year for a buck. ;)

~Lance No problem, Lance. Give your opinion - no worries. By the way, I could give a rat's behind about what the message board says about my bids.

I spent like it was my last day on earth today in 2 leagues. It certainly was my last big spending day in those 2 leagues, that's for certain.

I bid to win. If I believe in guys, I go get them. It's that simple. I could throw $5 on a bunch of clowns, but that isn't my style.

In one, my 2/19 winner take all, my hitting is outrageous. I needed a couple things, another solid starter and a little more speed. So I blew a huge chunk specifically to get Cueto and Velez and plug two of my 3 weaker areas. Velez ought to be starting, now or later. The Giants better go young soon. So I took the chance that he gets 50 steals this year. If he does, I probably win that category.

I agree, Jack... You have to forget what value everybody puts on a player and bid what he's worth to your team. Same with drafting, and same in the auction.

[/QUOTE]I noticed a few things...many of which I've forgoten. :D

I loved Joe Morgans clear rip on the MLB starting in Japan..."THIS is the REAL opening day game"...and Benjamin Franklin agreed! :D

I noticed the rude "booooing" of President Bush...low class...not the time nor place for that crap...no comment.

I noticed a tear well up during the national anthem that was well done by that talented opera singer.

I told my friend Brett (who's gambling in Tahoe, and called for my advice)...and I told him "Unless there is a political fix...ATL should win, and it should go under 8.5...but being a new ballpark...and in Washington D.C...and with Bush there throwing out the first pitch...you never know")

I noticed Chipper is a stud. (Shawn Childs hates him...Dan Kenyon loves him)...Kenyon 1, Childs 0.

I noticed Zimmerman was worth every dollar the guy who out-bid me payed...young and good = nice.

That's all I noticed! :D

LANCE, I thought the singer was horrible....I heard enough of that "singing", when I was younger, in the Catholic church. Not good at all IMO.

I agree, booing of Bush wasn't merited for that type of event...heck, at least he could get the ball in there. Anyone remember the guy in Cincy last season?

I also noticed, Odalis Perez is the man!! :D

The people who booed the President at a baseball game would PAY to see a Mapplethorpe Exibition.

No class at all. Those people were just not raised right.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

At least for one game, he was worth it. We'll see how this pans out after he goes through the league once.

Once the league gets some tape on him and see him on the mound at least once, I guarantee he gets hit like the rookie that he is.

Gekko Trivia, Week 1: Let the other owners in your league think they are getting the stud rookie pitcher from the Reds when they pick Bailey this March, but you will know better. Save some FA $$$$ and take a chance on Johnny!

If only I headed my own advice...got him in almost every league, but failed in the main and auction.

OK, so maybe I should have bid more than $176. He was dominant today and there is no disputing that. Will he do it every time? NO.

Will there be other valuable FAAB pickups available to me? YES.

Will having 99% of my FAAB dollars available help me get the next potential super star rookie? YES.

Randy - back when we went to see shandler in february, I asked him for a breakout pitcher in 08 after the seminar was over. He said gorrzalony. I specifcally asked him "what about cueto". He said no. I don't have gorz on any of my 5 teams, but I do have cueto on 3 of them. ;)
