Dropped closers
Is it fair to assume that a cut closer will be available in the free agent market?
A team in Chi2 took 5 closers in the first half of the draft and the worst is better then most of our number 2's. If we save our FAAB will we be able to bid on these guys once their owner cuts them? I can hear Gekko already...

Very good question. I am also in Chi 2 and this will effect the way we spend our FAAB dollars. I am anxious for a response and glad you thought to get this out of the way prior to the season.

The commissioner, Greg, has the power to remove any player from the free agent pool if he believes that player will adversely affect the overall competition.
A top closer like Broxton, Mariano, etc... would probably not be available to be bid on.
However, the owner is not forced to keep a player on his 30 man roster.

I think the list should be the Insurance list. I do believe that good players should not be dropped but in this case the team that has the closers will set a NFBC record, which only gives him 15 points in saves. At some point when they are up 30 saves on the rest of the league they will be better off dropping one of these guys.

I also think the list should be provided ahead of time to limit confusion. I also think the commissioner should have the right to deviate from the list in the event a player is playing way above his original slot (Braun a few years ago). We definitely need a ruling on the closers prior to the season as at some point this will become an issue.

The owner is not forced to keep any player. I understand dominating a category and then releasing some players when a huge category lead is had.
However, the released player might not be available on the free agent list if the commissioner takes him off.

A list would be too hard to compile. Every circumstance is unique. As mentioned above, players can come out of nowhere to dominate.
Let's say Pujols, breaks his ankle tomorrow. He is out 2-3 months. He is cut by some of his teams. He is probably not be available on the free agent list. Player 2 has same injury, he may be available on free agent lists. Every one is slightly different.
It is all in the commissioner's hands. That is why he gets the BIG $$$$$.
Thanks and have a nice day.

I'm sure Greg or someone else will answer this when they get back from their draft cities, but I think you can assume a player who is 'arguably' a top 100 player will not be available in your FA pool.
Right now that would probably be top 100 by ADP, but during the season that will obviously change as values go up and down based on circumstances.
I'm pretty sure you won't find a static list ever, but a healthy top closer being dropped will NOT make it to your roster.
Plus more than likely the guy taking 5 closers is going LIMA and using minimal SP. I'd go further and bet he won't drop any of them.
Good luck,
Dyv

I can hear Gekko already... the answer is yes, you will be able to bid on him. the same exact situation happened a year or two ago and greg ruled that the closer(s) will go in the faab pool. i believe it was at the end of the season though. if someone dropped closers earlier in the season, not sure what the answer would be.

Let's see if anything happens at the July 31st deadline, but right now Sherrill remains in the free agent pool for this league.

I can hear Gekko already... Greg's call. My guess is if the owner drops Broxton but keeps Dotel, Broxton might not be available. Dropping Dotel, however, would earn the owner a $50 FAAB gift certificate.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I really think that Greg and Tom needed to address this back when it was posted on the "Ask the NFBC A Question". I don't like the fact that Brian Wilson was removed.
