Minimum IP In 2005
Okay, there's been a lot of talk about instituting a minimum innings pitched limit in the NFBC. I asked STATS to download the current IP for each team yesterday and the results were very interesting. Here's the quick data and maybe I'll post all of this later:
1) In the NFBC, minimum innings pitched this year would have almost NO effect on teams in the main event. Only one team -- crazytown.gov with 96.1 -- has less than 100 IP. The next closest is Hankerchiefs at 320.0 IP. Even JerseyPaul is at 388. It's possible with a 500 IP limit this year, only one team would be affected.
2) The VAST majority will easily have 900 IP this year in the main event. I would say that six might not hit 900 IP, but all but 1 or 2 will hit at least 500 IP.
3) The auctions are slightly different. Only 1 team has less than 120 IP right now and only four have less than 300 IP right now. Four others have less than 500 IP, but most will easily top 700 IP. Not overwhelming, but based on 163 auction teams compared to 300 main event teams, it's slightly higher.
The rhetoric in the last week seemed to scare a few people that the contest could be flawed. At this point, the data says differently. Even adding a 300 IP limit next year for everything wouldn't change much, other than to quiet the speculation about what could happen. Those who go with closers and avoid starters likely would continue doing so. Even a 500 IP minimum might not change anything.
Feedback? Thoughts?

Feedback?
Feedback? Thoughts? So... is there any harm in putting in a 500 IP minimum?

Gekko - it may be possible to look exclusively at pitching and see how the "all reliever" strategy effects things. How will you also figure out how this strategy effects hitting results. As I said before, in the NY7 draft, because two teams filled their bench with backup hitters before anyone else even competed their active rosters, teams in that league have slightly weaker starting hitters and definitely have weaker benchs. When injuries occur, these teams are at a disadvantage.
The relief pitcher drafting strategy has a ripple effect into hitting. This cannot be ignored.

Remember, we're going to add the rule again that you must draft players on 40 man rosters. That prevents the Class A pitcher strategy that was used this year. Using all closers is still a strategy that could be used without a large minimum IP limit and I don't mind that.
We'll see. In the auction leagues, I may add something, but nothing here shows me a need for a large IP minimum in the main event.

Agreed.
Hey Greg -- on a side note, my wife is pregnant and she's due in early March. When is the 2006 draft date? I'm hoping I can defend my title without missing the delivery.

If there are not daily transactions, I will not get into the league next year. It just doesnt make sense to pretend that you are the top of the line fantasy league and that you invite people to pay top dollar to pick and run their teams but dont allow them to do it the same way it could be done in real life. Daily transactions will give the owners who are snake bitten with injuries, the chance to compete and not just lose points for a whole week.

I meant to post the dates today as I think we have finalized sites for all three cities. Tampa may not happen in 2006 as I wanted (still fighting that internally). I don't have a calendar in front of me, but I believe the dates are March 18-19. Celebrate the child's two-week-old birthday in Las Vegas with us!!

hey newkidintown,
I'm a daily transaction type person too (six of my eight leagues are daily) but contests like this won't exist with daily transactions. I'm pretty sure that weekly tranactions were the way things started originally back in the olden days. Daily stuff is a function of the internet and easy to track stats. The thing is that many people just don't have the time or desire to make daily moves. Greg may consider a separtae league or two with daily moves but the main event need 300+ participnats to exist and he won't get them with daily moves. And as an aside, I will be back for a third year come next March.

I really don't care if you put a relatively high innings pitched requirement in the main event. When teams from all the different leagues have to compete against each other for one Grand Prize, the more conformity you can legislate in the rules the fairer the contest. I also have no problem with the 40 man roster requirement, the Class A pitcher thing was a loophole that wasn't caught in time and shouldn't have been there, however I would be extremely disappointed if a higher than 300 inning requirement is placed on the auction leagues.
When the only teams you will be competing against are all sitting at the same table, adjusting your strategy to what is happening around you should be an important part of the game. While I went the no starter and low innings route this year, had 3 or more teams done the same I would have blinked and taken advantage of the extra starters to buy cheap and stream two start pitchers. It was something I was prepared to do this year and will likely do next year if several teams go the low inning route.
I was really looking forward to the possibility of 6 or 7 teams running the bids up on injured pitchers next year. As was stated in the other thread, success with a strategy one year almost certainly dooms it to failure due to over use the next year. There aren't many strategy options available in an NL or AL only league as it is, please don't legislate away one of them.

Ken, I ask you the same question I asked Hank and got no response. Did you play in either auction league last year? The closer stategy isn't like your some baseball guru. It is a part of loop hole that was closed in year one and open up in year two. I don't know if a group of guys expressed interest to Greg about dropping the innings behind the scenes, but he hasn't answer that question either.
Now, I will give you a story about this years event. This being my second season in a national event. This was my first experience with someone not drafting starters. I have never played in a Yahoo or Espn league, so I don't know if it is common there. I played two years in a free sandbox league besides my home AL auction league. I'm the commissioner so I'm always looking to close any loop holes especially on the pitching where it is easist to manipulate the stats. When we put a pitcher in, he has to be in for ten days unless he is hurt or sent to the minors. After playing in the event in year one, I recruited a couple of players from my home league to play.
In Las Vegas, after completing the NL auction league, I ran into an owner from back home. He was headed to play in the AL $650 league and I was going to play in the AL $1250 league. I explained to him in a couple of minutes what had gone on with the two owners taking closers only. He being in the financial business is alway looking for an angle. He decided to try it. His team name is Insulators, he is leading that league. He main event team is currently sitting at 281.
I'm not getting much of a following on this, so maybe I'm all alone on this one. As I said earlier, I'd like to see Greg offer both and let the players decided which they prefer. The edge for me might be the play in the league with minimal innings required as the starter could be cheaper.
As for the Main event, with 15 teams, a couple of teams will most of the time come up with balance pitching staff to beat the closer stategy. As for Vegas gambler calling it dead money, I don't think so. They have to be consider especially if winning total is around 100-110 points. I have no problem with inning requirement in the draft.
As for GG concern about Las Vegas league 1 and New York league 7, what impact does it have when those leagues are ranked 2nd and 3rd by league strength. Also Gordon can I get your cheat sheet for football. Kevin was good at talking on the phone and looking at your player list last year!!

I have played ESPN and Yahoo for a number of years and in a 5x5 setup I have never seen a team try this strategy. I successfully won a 4x4 AL-only legaue using a closer strategy in ESPN before they implemented a minimum inning requirement. In a 4x4 league, this can work but I see no chance at all in a 5x5 league.
That said, there will be teams that try it next season whether or not some type of minimum innings are required. Everyone thinks they have an angle. But in a no trade environment, some type of balanced roster is the only way to go.

CC, yes I played in the NL auction last year with this years Atlanta Ractors owner Jeff Rackliffe, we finished third after leading most of the year and fading at the end. We had a normal pitching staff of starters and closers. I don't claim to have invented the closer only strategy but I thought it might work if I were the only one to try it. I knew if it were successfull it would be a one time thing because I'm certain several people will try it next year. Which is why I don't want to see the rules changed much for next year, I see a great opportunity for some really undervalued starters or a chance to punt saves as people overbid for closers. This is one of the fun parts of the game for me in trying to take advantage of how the draft is going. I took great pleasure in throwing out closers early after getting mine and forcing others to overpay or go without. The same was done in one of the other leagues when someone took the three top shortstops and forced everyone else to overpay for what was left. I like the low minimum innings rule because it opens up more situations for underpaying for some players and overpaying for others. I will play and be competitive no matter what the rules next year but I enjoy having lots of choices as to how I want to build my team. With such a high level of players in the NFBC you can't sneak through many unknowns, and undervalued players are hard to find.

Minimum IP In 2005
Personally I have no issue with a closer/MR staff strategy, what I do have as an issue is loading up slots with inactive players.
If a minimum is NOT put into places, I think you will see alot more people try to exploit this gap.

Haven't been posting much what with trips to west Africa and backpacking. However here's my two cents:
I can work with eliminating inactive players as long as a mimimum innings pitched rule does not preclude use of all closers/relievers (e.g. 300 innings). I don't buy the argument that a team using this strategy adversely affects teams outside the division. That is a copout posted by owners who had a crappy draft and are looking for someone else to blame. My NCOFB team sucks this year and you know whose fault that is? Mine. Mine alone. One could just as well say that players who drafted Barry Bonds and other busts early this year unfairly hurt other teams outside their divisions.
As far as the efficacy of the strategy - let the market decide it. The two teams currently (August 3rd) 1st and 2nd in the LV1 NL auction league used guess what? The closer/reliever strategy. The race is far from over, however, and no telling who will come out on top.
While we can get rid of minor leaguers let's not reduce the possible strategies. I would much rather play bridge than spades.
