The fantasy baseball season cannot progress without this thread!! We can now begin the countdown to pitchers and catchers reporting and then ultimately to opening day. That is the progression these days.

1. Anonymous thread
2. Pitchers and Catchers report
3. Fantasy Drafts
4. The season begins.

There is no other progression that would work without each of these components or it simply would not be NFBC Fantasy Baseball :D

Let the countdowns begin!!

I thought I read that within the draft you would see the name of the owner, even though he's "anonymous" on the signup. I'm in a DC where even the owner listed on the league site has a bogus name.

Knowing who you're playing against can constitute an edge, albeit minor, if you have a history of playing in these leagues.

Is it possible to sign up for a league with the condition that I don't play against an "anonymous" owner?
Guys, when each of you sign up for an NFBC event, you register your contact info and there is a box there that says Display Name. It's right there for everyone to post their display name for the league, for the national standings, etc. It's automated to show up what the user has entered there.

We have been through this before: Some owners right now are using Anonymous for business purposes, for family reasons and yes to not showcase their every pick. If you think anyone under Anonymous has an advantage because of this, please avoid that league. We are filling these up one a day and we don't have a lot of Anonymous owners so far. I especially don't think anyone is going as Anonymous now to scout others' picks in December, so that's not a concern. As we get closer to March we'll ask people to show their names in those final drafts so that there isn't any perception of scouting others.

Again, STATS isn't hiding anything; everyone has the ability to put their Display Name into every signup. Good luck all and let's keep this great format rolling.
We'll use ANONYMOUS again this year if requested and all owners can avoid those leagues or just meet the person first-hand once the online draft room opens up. All names are disclosed there.
With all due respect the verbiage used (immediately) above can be misleading to a newcomer. What it should read is that anonymous will remain Anonymous until reaching the draft room where he'll use an alias, the only alias not allowed is the name Anonymous. :D

Have to admit though, the names you use when you enter the draft room are pretty funny...lol

if it was'nt for new players joining each year, the thread would not be an annual event, but it is good for laughs how it's fiercly defended or objected to.

As one user of Anonymous, I appreciate that when someone Googles my legal name they will *not* get a dozen or more hits coming from the NFBC Forums page. You can try this with your own name if you don't know what the results look like.

As far as knowing the true identity of a manager after the league fills, NFBC has a different set of fields for the registration and the display name.

I found out when I registered for DC 19 that I could change my display name to whatever I liked and that's what shows up when you go to the Owners List once the league fills. So, no, you can't find out their real name even after the league fills but by then it's too late for the squeamish to back out.

Someone mentioned a simple solution and easily the best solution. Nobody should see any name at any time until the season starts. Everyone is simply signed up as a number. When the first pitch flies then the owner names and team names appear. It makes it simple, it makes it fair, it makes it a non pain in the ass situation. No owners that think their picks are better have to worry about protecting themselves, and no owners have to worry about going up against such players. Everyone on even ground. Nobody knows who picked anyone. This should be implemented in all online drafts IMO.

I wonder if it's to late for this to be implemented? I think everyone would like this idea. In the DC drafts some like to share phone numbers so they would be revealed, but at least they'd know that going in.

This makes a lot of sense for online Main events that take place prior to the Live Main Events.

I do not like this suggestion, but for a totally unrelated reason. Because there are so few folks using the anonymous shield, I really do not care whether they are in one of my DC leagues or not. It truly makes no difference to me. I couldn't care less about other owners' picks or if they see mine. Importantly, however, if one or more owners that I know from past experience are really, really slow and/or inconsiderate were to join a league, I will try to avoid that league like the plague. I tend to like faster-paced drafts, although I can be very patient as long as owners generally try to be considerate and communicate. If there are folks who like to use all or most of their eight hours simply because it is "their time" and do not believe it is necessary to communicate to others about when they eventually may get around to making a selection, they certainly are entitled to participate in DC leagues, but I prefer to avoid those leagues. For this reason, I would not want all sign-ups to be annonymous. Also, I think knowing who you are drafting with sometimes helps to improve the chatroom discussions, and perhaps discourage some folks from becoming obnoxious under the cloak of annonymity.

All that being noted, I agree that your suggestion is completely fair to everyone; I just don't like it for my own personal reasons.

also, if everyone is just a number, doesnt that pretty much squash all sense of community and chatter during the drafts? You would have no idea of who youre chatting with and that would take away a lot of the fun in my opinion. If people want to use anonymous for whatever reason, so be it.

No thanks from my point of view.
Everybody is a number? I like the chat and personal interaction in a draft. I like knowing where another is from and if they're from the same neck of the woods. Or if I already know him or have drafted with him before. It gives these drafts the personal touch.
Assigning a number?
These drafts are supposed to be fun. If we wanted impersonal drafts, we'd get on a huge site like Yahoo or ESPN, WHERE WE MAY AS WELL BE A NUMBER.
I could give a rat's ass if a few people want to be anonymous. I don't care their reasons either. But, if caring so much about it that some want to turn us from names to numbers, then we will have lost something here at the NFBC.

Some points well taken and the DC drafts are a big part of the responses. What about the Online Main Events prior to the Live Main Events? There is very little chatter during these drafts. What are some of the opinions on that? I guess this only applies to those who are drafting multiple Main Event Teams.

In reality the Anonymous tag doesn't bother me at all in the DC formats as preparation for me is a work in progress during these. I wouldn't mind being anonymous in the Main Events until all teams have been drafted. Thinking while I type, this probably doesn't work either given there are Live Events the first weekend and online events in between. The first weekends live events get published and are available to a certain degree.
