2014 Early Season Draft Results
Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I'm in a draft where Yu Darvish went 17th, Clayton Kershaw 18th.
Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I hope this isn't a nfbc draft. Kershaw 18th? Yikes
Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
$150 DC 21

All never get value like that, cause there is no way I'd ever let him slip past my pick in the first round (13 slot) in this examplesek729 wrote:$150 DC 21

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I picked 1st in this draft and couldn't believe Kershaw kept falling, I mean I'm not down on Ency or Freeman by any means, but I'm not passing on the most dominant pitcher in years to grab a First Baseman like that in the 1st round.
Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
And the number 13 drafter will be considered smart for picking Kershaw.Gekko wrote:All never get value like that, cause there is no way I'd ever let him slip past my pick in the first round (13 slot) in this examplesek729 wrote:$150 DC 21
While others will think otherwise knowing he passed him in the first round.

#13 commented that his partner who lives in Asia went to bed, and they had Kipnis set as their next pick (who went 16th) and he was going to wait for him to get up.
Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
Incredible.
And somehow, somewhere, fantasy gods are conjuring up a great year for Kipnis and Tommy John for Kershaw, just to remind us we know nothing

Or like HOFer Lefty Gomez once said, "I'd rather be lucky than good." Isn't that the truth in life.

That quote has been attributed to many.
It's funny in that those that are truly good at something are alleged to have said it.
It's even better to be lucky AND good.

I'm not going to make fun of Kershaw going so late after laughing at a guy for taking Peyton first overall in football.

I can't imagine how many folks told him about 'value'.

My Christmas miracle of getting him at 320 is looking better than getting Kershaw at 18th. Talk about luck.

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
That settles it. After reading this crap, my New Year's resolution is to start drafting with the hopelessly inept and obviously insane.
"Asia"...now that was classic.

The "projected" top pitcher drafted at 2.03 ? ... completely disrespectful of December ADP.Gekko wrote:I hope this isn't a nfbc draft. Kershaw 18th? Yikes
Last year's Kershaw ADP, 2.02 .... same pitcher, unlikely to achieve last year's numbers.

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I see the KJ spin machine is in full effect. Kershaw had a hip injury to end 2012 AND verlander and strasburg were both viable alternatives viewed on the same level as kershaw. This year there is kershaw and then a huge gap IMO. I wouldn't hesitate taking kershaw as early as 5, esp when the big money drafts get closerKJ Duke wrote:The "projected" top pitcher drafted at 2.03 ? ... completely disrespectful of December ADP.Gekko wrote:I hope this isn't a nfbc draft. Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I don't think the gap is nearly as large as made out to be. Dodgers had a Top 5 defense last season and the infield defense is significantly weaker with Ellis and Punto gone, replaced by this Cuban kid Guerrero. Juan Uribe is a defensive stud, he had a healthy year for once, but he's aging and his glove will start getting pushed out of the lineup. Banking on a sub-2 ERA again, or even a sub 2.3 is a pipe dream.
~2.50 ERA, ~1.02 WHIP, 230 Ks are great, but not "omg clear cut first rounder". Him and Darvish are on the same tier in my book and both of them belong around the turn of a 15-team league IMO.

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I've tried this strategy and so have 2 pretty smart individuals.Lunatic wrote:Deadheadz wrote:One entry in hundreds (thousands?) will win $20K. Hell, my team name is Mock Lobster for Pete's sake.
By upside I refer to Tulo specifically. If he's healthy, truly healthy all season, he will be a monster. What does it matter that he's at DH? Could be Papi there instead. Fine, put Tulo at SS. I've got Desmond at DH. Gotta put someone there. How many people will get 20/20 with 80/80/.280 from their DH?
That's the upside I speak of. The downside of taking Tulo with your first pick and not backing him up til much later has been well documented for the past several years, hasn't it?
Cheers!
No problem backing him up; but surely, starting a draft with 3 SS? I have never seen it in all my years of playing and for probably a good reason; smart players don't make idiotic decisions such as this one. But hey, you're right, it is your $150 to piss away.
Good Luck and please join one of my leagues.

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
We just finished the DC Express where Jacoby Ellsbury went 4th overall.
And I thought I would be reaching down from my own spot at #6 to get him. Threw a wrench into my whole strategy. Had to settle for Kershaw and forced to take my OFs (Choo/Rios) in rounds 2/3 thus losing my shot at Kimbrel.
Wound up punting Closers. Got a bunch 'o SU men so it'll be Closer Carousel time before I get any saves other than rest days.
Greg will likely post the first 6 rounds here soon...

A tad different in a league where you can trade vs a 50-round DC.
