$$RED ALERT$$ Maikel Franco - 3B Phillies

Post by Gekko » Tue May 12, 2015 4:35 pm

It appears the Phillies will call up third base prospect Maikel Franco this weekend, as last night they optioned third baseman Cody Asche to AAA to learn to play left field. By waiting till this weekend, the Phillies can retain his rights through the 2021 season.

Franco is hitting .341 with four home runs, 12 doubles and 19 RBI for the IronPigs this year. 341!!!!!! Damn, who couldn't use a .341 batting average stud who plays 3B.

Folks, Franco is one the last highly touted minor league prospects available this year. I tried to secure his service in all my DC leagues this. Don't miss out on the opportunity to acquire his services on Sunday. Remember, he fills a scarce position, 3B. 8-)

Gekko is the best! Syndergaard was available in my league last week. Went for $568 I think.

The real question should be-- "If Albert Pujols was available in FAAB how much would you pay?"

"if Franco turns into a third-base version of Albert Pujols — which many scouts believe he can — that one extra year of control would mean millions. The consensus among the scouts is that Franco, 22, has the kind of ability to hit on the north side of 30 homers and a .300 average for 10-plus years."

Gekko - Can we get some advice on a range of winning bids this weekend?

Holy shit!!! I didn't even know about the Pujols comparison. My oh my. I mean north side of 30 homers and a .300 average for 10-plus years! Wow! Since everyone's dollar amounts differ at this stage of the game, I wouldn't disagree with owners putting out a "max bid". A "max bid" is leaving your self with roughly $2 a week for the remainder of the season in order for you to still be able to make moves. So, with 19 FAAB weeks remaining after this week, I could see owners spending all but $38 of their remaining FAAB. Does that help?

Gekko, we applaud your efforts to help your fellow competitors. It's also nice to see a Phillie on your report.

In a full year of AAA last year, Franco hit .257 and slugged .428 and he was called up to one of the worst offenses in baseball.
MLB.com ranked him the #55 prospect in the minors this season.

Personally I hope he does well. I just wouldn't be in a rush to spend a lot of $$$ on him.

Sounds a lot like Pujols who was Ranked Baseball America #42 prospect after the 2000 season.
Thanks Gekko for the advice including the all-important FAAB bid advice.

MINOR LEAGUE STATS

Pujols: 1 year in minors
Avg .314
OBP .378
SLG .543

Franco: 5+ years in minors
Avg .279
OBP .327
SLG .456

These players don't look similar at all, to me.

For the record, I live very close to where Franco has played minor league ball. I have gone to a number of games and have watched him repeatedly. I haven't been overly impressed. He may have some tools. He may evolve into something good. The way he has approached hitting prior to his hot start this year has left me questioning how good he can/will be early on.

Scouts draw parallels to Kris Bryant in that he plays third base. Except he doesn't have the same power, obp, or batting average ;)

Franco is a very nice consolation prize to owners who missed out on kris bryant. Don't get left out again. ALL ABOARD! 8-)

Just checked, Franco is really coming into his own. Average up to .346!!!!! And he hit a hr and has 5 rbi in his last two games. Damn, we could all use some of that from a third baseman

I have also heard the Phillies are moving him to catcher. Just imagine how valuable Pujols in his prime at catcher for 4+ months would be. Will be very surprised if a team finishes in top 10 of any of the three primary contests without owning Franco.

Lol. I was wondering where these Gekko posts had disappeared to. Another sign of the boards dying.

Franco did it again last night. Another 2-4 with a rbi. Batting average up to .408!! Some owners have asked me why I'd be willing to post about franco? My response has been that I feel a duty to give back to message board participants with nuggets of information that can hopefully be used to benefits someone. Enjoy!

Hitting .400 after the Phils call him up might be asking a little much, but I could certainly see .375 without a problem.
He'll probably single handedly 'will' the Phillies into the playoffs.
And I believe ownership has already committed a significant minority piece of the team to him, just as soon as he gets through his first month.

.

Based on your advice Marc, I've fired up the Flux Capacitor, got it up to 88mph and gone back to get Franco on half my Draft Champion teams.

I just couldn't hear the last thing Doc Brown said before I left. It seemed like he was warning me about something. :o

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

so you think because he had those results at AAA (remember who is pitching there) it will translate to Philly?

How about his near .400 BABIP?
