NFBC Slow Draft Results: First Six Rounds
We currently have three NFBC Slow Draft, Draft Champions Leagues going right now and it's time to whet the appetites of the rest of our NFBC members. I'll post the first six rounds of these Slow Drafts here for all to see, mixing them up so that nobody knows which league we are showcasing. Enjoy the results because this year the early rounds are wide open, as you'll quickly see here from these results.
I'll create new Slow Draft signup threads for anyone who wants to jump into baseball mode now, so look for that soon. Let's keep the Slow Drafts going and have some fun with all of this. Thanks all.
Just a heads up: These NFBC Slow Drafts use a unique Draft Champions format that isn't used in any other league we run here. These are 45-round drafts that don't allow any free agent pickups during the season. What you draft is what you get for the season. You can make starting lineup changes during the season, but you never get to add or subtract from your roster. That 45-man roster is your team for the whole season. The rest of the game is the same: 5x5 Rotisserie, pay Top 3 finishers, 15 teams. Sound good?

NFBC Slow Draft Results: First Six Rounds
Is it me or are those back-end first round, first picks second round looking SWEEEEEEET? Kind of reminds me of 2006.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

NFBC Slow Draft Results: First Six Rounds
I'm anxious for any fantasy baseball news.
I mentioned to my wife that there is "only" 100 days till baseball season.
Her response? "You remember that, but can't remember to get stamps for Christmas cards?"
Well....yeah.

Is there any way we can get dates these rounds were conducted on? I'm interested in how/whether the recent signings and trades affected value.

NFBC Slow Draft Results: First Six Rounds
Although Chase Utley will be the first 2B to be chosen in most leagues, that group that was so far behind him just a couple of years ago has almost caught up. There are six 2B eligible players in the second and third rounds.
Every round had at least one player whose first name began with 'J'. There was even a 'J' run in the fifth round.
Are we going back to the old days of the non-hitting shortstops?
Only five shortstops were taken in the first six rounds. Blame it on lack of steroids or a change of guard at the position, but power is not in the modern shortstop's game for the most part. Only three shortstop eligible players had more than 18 home runs last year.
Tulowitzki with 32, Hanley with 24, and Rollins with 21. Shortstop is a good source for speed though, eight shortstop eligible players had at least 20 stolen bases last year. Rafael Furcal and Jose Reyes were not in that group.
There were 10 1B eligible players taken in the first two rounds, compared to only seven outfielders.

I appreciate getting bits and pieces of these early drafts, but can't wait until we get a bunch of meaningful drafts so we can get some full, substantive ADP's.
The draft from this string is very interesting, but I just lock on some players and have a bad feeling about. Certainly not numbers supported as all these had great years last year, but:
Bust of the first round...Mauer.
Bust of the second round...Justin Upton.
Bust of the third round...Aaron Hill.
Bust of the fourth round...Zobrist.
Bust of the fifth round...none.
Bust of the sixth round...Kershaw.
2011 "Whatever happened to...?" Award...BJ Upton.
Others random pre-aneurysms:
First pitcher taken in 2011...Verlander.
Round Edwards Kings first pitcher taken in 2010...Sixth.
The more I look at it, the more I think I have a new #1 on my list. Pujols will be the lock in most if not all leagues and Hanley will be the consensus #2. Neither are bad picks, but here in December, every time I look at the numbers, projections, tea leaves, and quatrains, I run back to one person. If I get the prime pick, I am going with Braun.

It looks like the busts are all players who had breakout seasons last year.
Missouri/Missouri rules in Wayne's World
Just out of curiosity, Wayne, what numbers or projections put Braun ahead of Pujols? Or is this where the tea leaves and quatrains come into play

Hmmm...about equal between projections and tealeaves. I just think Braun has just about everything going for him including speed to make the complete package. Pujols may have him in BA, but all else will be close or in Braun's favor.
Hill, Zobrist, and Mauer have been around long enough to get past Missouri/Missouri test. By 2011, we will be calling their 2009 their career or outlier years. Justin is clearly failing the Missouri/Missouri. One year of outstanding results just doesn't make my second round. And there are other pitchers with more track record and control than Kershaw that could be had in the sixth.

Your post got me thinking. A dangerous thing .You're right, sorta, about Missouri/Missouri. Mauer and Hill have proved in the past to have good years. It's just that the years did not match up powerwise to say the least.
Maybe when a player has a year like Mauer or Hill or Zobrist in 2009 or Ryan Ludwick and Josh Hamilton in 2008, we should call these AHOY's for, already had overachieving year. If a player is an AHOY, he has had his career year and we can never expect that player to reach those levels again.
AHOYs can never be over the age of 32. We can assume that most players have had their overachieving year by that age. Although it can happen, like Ibanez last year.
A list of AHOy's to join Mauer, Hill, Zobrist, Ludwick, and Hamilton-
Pedroia
Quentin
Wright
Martin
A case could be made that these could all be AHOY's and not to expect their highest levels again. Maybe more players should be added to the list. Thoughts?

I will try to add to the list, but one that I think should come down is Wright. Since he came up around mid-year in 2004, he has been a very consistent performer, especially when you tie his counting stats and their increases to increased AB (except of course for his speed that I cannot figure out). Big candidate to rebound, power-wise, this year.
We used to have a tradition when I played softball. Whenever a player had a great play, especially after not doing to much or screwing up, we would give him a Yoo-hoo. If the Ahoy's are career year types, then maybe rebounders are Yoo-hoo's?

I like it.
Yoo Hoo's for rebounders, Yoo Hooie's for rebounders coming back from injury.
Wright will be an AHOY in some people's mind, a Yoo Hoo in others. There are a lot of Yoo Hooie's this year. Reyes, Sizemore, Hamilton, and Santana all were first rounders in drafts last year.

Not for nothing, but Yoohoo already has a place in rotisserie lore as a "Yoohoo shower" was the recommended reward for winning one's league as proposed by the Founding Fathers.
Though somehow a picture of Lindy drenched in a fake chocolate liquid as opposed to holding a big check or crystal trophy doesn't quite cut it....
But if it were the case, for Lindy's sake, I am pretty sure no cows were harmed making Yoohoo and I know no pigs were.

The steal of this draft is the team that got Johan Santana at the 57th pick. A close second is the team that got Sabathia at 41.
Both those guys should be top 10 picks.
And to the guy who said Mauer will be a bust....what would lead you to believe that? His numbers last year were put up in 5/6 of a season when you consider that he missed the first month. His numbers will probably go down a little, but he should still be worth the # 5 pick, especially when you consider scarcity at the C position.
