Greg and Shawn To Team Up At LABR League Auctions

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Fri Feb 19, 2010 2:35 am

Despite failing to win a single LABR League title since 1994, USA Today has been gracious enough to invite me back for another season in LABR. Auctions are being held March 6-7 in Phoenix with 13 industry writers competing in the AL-only and NL-only auctions. Results of the auction values are published two weeks later in USA Today Sports Weekly and both leagues are played out for bragging rights.

I've SUCKED enough in LABR despite a second place AL finish in the debut season of 1994 and a second and third place finish in the AL and NL with John Zaleski in 2006 that it's time to employ a hired gun. Since my team name in USA Today is NFBC, I felt it was best to bring in the best of the NFBC and hire Shawn Childs as my new co-manager. Shawn and I are going to double-team for both auctions and have the time of our lives, while hopefully winning a pair of industry league titles.

If this were the Iditarod, Shawn would be the lead dog and I'd be sitting back on the sled drinking Yukon Jack!! :D I hope this is how our partnership works!! :D But he's working on his dollar values now and I'm working on mine and we'll get together in Phoenix a few days before the auctions and compare notes. We'll email and talk beforehand and form strategies well in advance of hooking up. It should be a fun venture on Draft Day and during the season.

I thank Shawn for taking the time out of his busy and hectic family life to join me in the Valley of the Sun for this. He's travelling on his dime and doing this for fun, while all the while knowing that his knowledge of baseball far exceeds mine now or ever before. I spend more time these days dealing with hotel contracts than player values, which is a far cry from how my time was spent a decade ago. So I need Shawn more than he needs me. But it's great to get Shawn involved with this group and on a new stage and who knows where this could lead if he makes the right contacts. But again, I'm just glad he agreed to do this with me and we'll have more fun than anything else.

Mike Sheets is also in both auctions and will be representing the Fanball team. I hope Ryan joins him as a co-manager because that would be a lot of fun. Ryan, Shawn seconds my opinion and is ready for a side bet if you join Mike in Phoenix. :D I'm talking big now because I know I have a heavy hitter on my team!!! :D But we all have our hands full with Rick Wolf, Nate Ravitz, Tristan Cockroft, the BaseballHQ guys, Larry Schechter, Steve Gardner, Steve Moyer, Jason Grey and all participating. But should be fun anyway.

Okay, give Shawn some advice on how to deal with me (sorry, they don't allow drinking during these auctions or otherwise the advice of "just give Greg a 12-pack of Coronas and take charge" would be good advice) and how to deal with these industry pros. We'll take all the advice you can give us!! And root for the NFBC team this year. We'll run everything about our team this year on this thread, good or bad. Thanks all.

He made his name here first, long before anyone else paid him for his draft and writing services. He will always be known as an NFBC/NFFC Charter Member and a good friend.

Good luck Greg and Shawn and say hello to the gang for me. While I had to give up my spot this season, I hope to be back in the future.

I hope Shawn does not get too bored. I mean, other than the drafts themselves, he'll have to suffer through the pre-draft get together at Hooters, perhaps go to a spring training game or two and play a little poker in the Colton/Wolf suite in the evenings.

But at least I will be with Ron and a bunch of NFBCers in NYC and Boston for the First Pitch Forum tour.

Sounds like you made a sound hire, Greg. Just keep him away from Turf Paradise and the Superfecta's and you may have a fighting chance this season. Do you bowl?

Don & Charlie's in the evening? If not, you gotta find a way to hit Zipps Sports Grill Camelback. They have an outdoor deck which features TV's and is great for College hoops.

Make us proud, Childs.
This is news to me.

Mr. Crane - Greg did not dump me. "E" did. :D

Sorry "E", after catching up on this board recently, I could not resist :D ;) Just having some rehab fun there.

Actually, the truth of the matter is that when "E" (sorry, it IS fun calling you that) ;) purchased NFBC/NFFC, I launched FantasyFactor.com a week later, and this competes with SnapDraft, so the writing was on the wall then, which is no problem as mergers and buy outs happen all the time in the industry.

The much larger problem is I suffered a Pulmonary Embolism last Nov 3, along with some clots in my right leg.

We're talking two lung clots that had 90-95% blockage here. The man upstairs has decided to keep me around because as of three weeks ago, they are gone, but the leg clots won't go away significantly for another 6 months.

The meds and the rehab were ALL I focused on for ten weeks until about three weeks ago when I got the news the lung clots were gone. They say I'm doing as well as expected which is great news, especially since I worked so hard on the rehab.

So... I've just started to see if I could handle the prep work needed to compete at this level. Of course I can not, but it sure is GREAT THERAPY :D

My local AL/NL leagues moved up a week due to Easter Weekend. So I can't do 27th/28th. I can't do the 20th/21st either due to a prior commitment that weekend.

So I signed up for WCOFB for their Friday event on 26th. I'm working with Greg on doing a phone draft if possible and I signed up for a DC SAT just this morning. I'm thrilled to be back in the action.

I can't tell you how happy I am for Greg and Tom that things have worked out so well for them the past few months. :D

Many thanks to Greg, Charlie and all at Fanball for their many well wishes these past few months.

Now pinch-hitting for Pedro Borbon, Shawn Childs... Good luck guys!! Greg and I had a few real good teams that could just not catch a break when needed. I'll be rooting for you.

John,

I have been meaning to reach out to you to see how you are doing. So glad you are getting better. Best wishes and prayers your way.

I am beginning to think a few of you industry types might not care for E much.

John,

Does this mean no time for projections? :D

If not, this could be an eye- opener for you :D

Good luck, John. Sometimes the Man upstairs gets it right.

Chest - many thanks for the well wishes.

The only thing I don't like about Ryan is that he kicked my ass in the Main last year. He has earned his lofty perch in this industry and is proving to already do great things here. You gotta tip your hat once again.

Doughy - my projections had Ryan finishing last in W and K, which he did :D He finished with 93 points, which is exactly where I had him, 5 pts out.

Man, you certainly have got a lot of mileage out of 5-minutes of post draft banter  You just passed RT on the all-time projection smack leader board.

Eddie - 170 SB last year :D Killed even your projections of my team. LOL. Too bad that's the only thing I killed as several bad picks like Hardy and injuries did me in.

Soooooooooo glad it's a new year :D
Sorry to hear this John. I had clots in both my shoulders about a year or so apart after high school and during college. No two doctors could agree on how it happened, but the only lasting effect was that it killed my baseball career and I have to be careful with certain exercises. Other than that it just kind of resolved itself with time. A good excuse to take it easy for awhile, good luck.

In two days I should be sitting at a spring training ballpark drinking beer and watching baseball in the glorious Arizona sun. I can do that now because Shawn Childs is going to be my co-manager in LABR this year!!

Okay, who is going to give us some advice for our teams this year? Who wants to tell me/Shawn we shouldn't dump saves this year? Who wants to tell us we need 75/75 from our first $100? Who is going to give this Hall of Fame team some REAL advice we can use on Saturday night for the AL LABR and Sunday night for the NL LABR? ;)

Baseball is here. I better study Shawn's Cheat Sheets on the flight from St. Louis to Phoenix. ;) See ya in two days Shawn.
